Looking for a Goddess
By:

Quite a while ago, I read an article about a Sea Goddess who's name stated with a 'Yam' or 'Yem' or something of the sort, but that is all I can remember about her. I read this article over a year ago and since then my web history has been cleared.

Does anyone know a goddess by this name? Recently I have been drawn back to the name and have been searching but yeilding no results.

Thank you for the answer, but this was for sure a goddess. Now that I think about it, the name might even have started with 'Yew'.

I believe you are looking for Yemaya, the Goddess of the Sea in among the Yoruba tribe from West Africa and also in the Santerian religion.

Just to correct something, Yemaya is not exactly a Goddess. Santeria and African Traditional Religions like it(Vodou, Candomble, etc.) are monotheistic religions rather than polytheistic. A simple way to wrap your head around it is in some point comparing it to the Catholic Church, there is one supreme creator(Olodumare in Santeria) and the Orishas(such as Yemaya) are like the saints(more as intermediates to God in Santeria). Olodumare is honored but not directly worked with, we serve and honor the Orishas who are closer to him as he is seen to be "busy with other matters".

Hope this cleared it up :)
