Ritual/spell

I have never understood this but what is the difference between a spell and a ritual ?

In general, a spell is a shorter and simpler affair, where as a ritual is more elaborate, at times requiring multiple people to preform. There are those who say that the work required for ritual is not necessary, and others that say that it generates more energy and better effect than just simple spell work.
