It's really a matter of finding what's best for yourelf. Personlly, I would be at a loss in meditation without well practiced breathing techniques. Looking into yoga practice can be very informative on this. Many people like to use aids in meditation, like music and incense. These can have an associative effect over time, as well as being intrinsicly helpful in a single experience. I tend to use music in order to blend away disruptive external sound, others find it helps to relax them. Nature sounds can help too.

It's up to you. Try out different methods, and find what suits you best :)

what zebrah said, it's very personal. breathing is important and clearing your mind, think of one word, or your breathing, either repeat to yourself 'breathe in, breathe out' or what i use to do repeat 'one' over and over in your head. slowly you'll be able to clear your mind without repeating something to yourself. music and incense are things many use, i tried once with music but i got distracted with it, haven't tried incense, sometimes crystals help. depending on what i want out of my meditation i'll hold either a moonstone or a dragon-stone [or something else depending]
