Could be the kind of spell you are trying to cast, or it could be lack of knowledge.

If it was a spell from the fantasy section, they are all fake, so they won't ever work. If you are new to magick, then I will recommend learning The Basics first. This differs from person to person, but usually consists of meditation, visualization, grounding and centering, shielding, etc.

There are some decent posts that will get you started in the General Info section in the forums, the will be pinned at the top. Also, Google has hundreds of pdfs available, make use of them.

This is purely on you. A ritual is just a series of steps to help you focus on a set goal or effect.
To cast successfully you must be able to formulate your spell, identify and focus on your target or path through which it will manifest and then channel the energy.
All this takes time and practice. I suggest you take a while to research various meditations and spend time getting used to energy work.
