An Athame can be formed from anything. Some of the ancients used obsidian, volcanic glass.
Most would now use a metal knife, kept only for ceremonies. (another knife for cutting herbs)
An Athame is only a tool, after all! Many witches during the persecution years, would have used just an ordinary kitchen knife.

I believe you meant to say "athame". And in my opinion an athame can be made of anything. In fact, Some materials conduct certain energy better than others. I have used a plain old kitchen knife and my personal 420 steel 2" black blade pocket knife in the past. I don't actually have an "athame". I usually cleanse my pocket knife and use it for what I need to do. Since I carry it everywhere with me that is legally acceptable, it feels like a part of me, and that is a good thing for a magick tool. I actually feel "naked" without it. I do not believe the "no cut" rule (where you aren't supposed to use an athame to cut anything other than energy). It works perfectly fine for me.

One day, I plan to smith my own weapons but I don't have the equiptment nor access to such facilities in my area. If you have made it yourself than I feel it would be the best ritual weapon you could ever own. I have heard of some people crafting athames from a solid piece of wood (no metal). So I see no reason why flint and wood would be a problem.
