dyxlexia and chat

it has come to my attention that a few people have been told off for wrong spelling in chat i know some of it is on purpose but my daughter was told off and sometimes she tries to keep up and cant help mispelling or in some cases text talk, and now ive seen a few more like it and i was wondering iff their could be someway of finding these people and having a list so they are noticed and helped ,i think it is brave of people with this to even try ,as usually they have little confidence in the first place, and need lots of encuoragement to mix with others, and yes i have it to but have had many years to learn.

Quite frankly, your disabilities are not our problems. Our jobs as moderators are to make sure the rules are being followed. It is not our job to keep track of which of you has problems, to help you with those problems or to baby you because you have disabilities and feel that you should be babied for them. Id your disability causes you to break rules I suggest that you find some sort of solution for the problem on your own such as a spell check.

To talk in text is just from being lazy or not wanting to take the time to write things out. If you do have a spelling problem or you need help in such instances please take the time to download the spell check or get you a dictionary to help you. I will say that just because you have problems or disabilites does not make you helpless nor have to be special you must follow the rules just like everyone else does..We cant let pne get away with breaking the rules and then gag another for the same thing.

I have dyslexia and I have a lot of trouble with spelling. When I was growing up I was taught to not let my disability hold me back from learning to spell properly or at least have the tools I needed on hand so that I could spell properly, i.e. a dictionary or spell checking devise. I find those who want to be given special treatment for there handicap to be lazy and unwilling to learn to cope with their disability. I am sick of those who would rather complain about being told to learn to spell/type better then actually taking the time to do something to improve their downfall. If you are having trouble with spelling I suggest downloading Firefox. This browser has a spell check built into it so that when you type if you have misspelled a word it will underline it for you. Not only does it tell you when you have misspelled a word it will also give you a list of possible words that you could be trying to spell. Another tool that will help you from incorrect spelling and grammar is proof reading. This is when you go back and read what you have written until you can read through your work without having to make any corrections.

During the typing of this post I was notified of at least four to five spelling errors. Though I can tell you that because I utilize this tool there are no spelling errors in this post.

i do not have dyslexia but i can say that i am unbiased in this case, i do understand that people may have trouble and issues but many of the time people just refuse to want to type properly, its only today from seeing kts's post that she has dyslexia and i never had an issue with understanding her, of course we make typos and such but lets not try to over do it, cause it goes bad for you in general life since that way or writing can affect your worded communication and people just don't always have patience with mis-communication

On the note of your daughter being told off, that wasn't the case. She was asked to not use text speak like everyone else. I can certainly understand a learning/reading/writing disability. And no one here knocks anyone for having one. We do not single people out to "pick" on, nor do we discriminate against those with known issues.

Whether the Dyslexia be Trauma (injury), Primary (hereditary), or Secondary (hormonal) the person with the disability is not in any way completely helpless. And as they are taught how to work with their disorder, they are shown how to compensate and develop good coping skills. Since often in the real world and in the job field many will not accept I'm dyslexic as an excuse for not stopping at a stop sign when driving, or messing up on a job you agreed you could perform.

Most dyslexics do have issues with spelling, reading and even sometimes speech. But when anyone can replace a word with a single letter or number with typing as they should in text speak, then that is indeed what it is "text speak". Often people use text speak out of having to cram mass amounts of words into a small space as such with cell phones. In the chatter this is not the case, you have plenty of space. As a dyslexic "yuo jus mit mes up yur spelin", but " 2 replace words 4 num3ers or leters is just laziness on ur part". So bottom line if it is misspelled and when asked you say I am dyslexic then ok we understand and can help you accordingly. But when you use actual text speak, then yes you will be warned like everyone else.

As for solutions, there are browsers with built in spell checkers; such as Firefox, Google Chrome, Konqueror and Opera. There is an Instant Messenger client called Pidgin that has one built in for your IM needs. All Mac OS systems have a spellchecker built in system-wide. And I have two spellcheckers here, the first is free and download-able it can be used with any application:

http://tinyspell.numerit.com/

And this one is online, you can type out entire im's, documents, etc.; check them then copy and paste them elsewhere. And you don't have to download it:

I hope this helps, and clarifies what is up to the user to correct, and what we as Moderators are responsible for.
