Depending on the scenario, you'd be surprised what can be used as tools. Since this is intended to be short, I'll only be listing the most common tools that we use. This post is made from experiences and lessons I've had growing up and are subject to be different with other tribes.
Drum (Grandfather & Hand-Drum)
One of the most common tools that we use are hand-drums and what we call the Grandfather drum which is typically seen at Powwows, the end of Sunddance ceremonies, and at the end of Wake's (funerals). When you use the Grandfather drum, it must be smudged (See Smudge Below), and given an offering usually Buffalo Sage or Tobacco. It's called the Grandfather drum because it's meant to venerate the Grandfather spirits. When you hit the drum, it becomes the heart-beat of our heart and Mother Earth. With these three aspects, we are able to heal with our chants and beats.
The hand-drum is used in the same ceremonies listed above, but they are also used during Round-Dances, birthdays, and other less, as you could say, formal events. Hand-drum songs are normally more upbeat with a specific beat pattern that isn't deviated from. This beat pattern is one, one-two, creating a double beat that is also supposed to represent our heartbeat.
Smudge
Smudge is a universal term for smoking medicines. Many of the herbs used in smudge mixes are also used in teas or in other applications, however many ingredients such as certain fungi are not safe to ingest. The idea is that these medicines are dried, mixed, and burned to produce smoke which is then used for prayer, cleansing, purification, and healing. It can also be used as offerings when using other tools, or when picking medicines. It's important to never buy smudge online for many reasons. The biggest one being that the energy of that spirit has been tampered with by being bought, or transported by people that have bad energies. Everything has a spirit and deserves it's own respect. The best approach you can take is to attend a Powwow or Round-Dance, or Native styled market with tobacco and attempt to trade with someone. You'd be surprised what following traditional protocols can have an impact on.
