First things first, you will need a stick around 7"-14". Carve or sand nubs, knots, and the bark off. Also, it needs to be a straight stick. Afterc you have it carved, put some meaning runes on it through, also carving. Afterwards, decorate the wand. But don't use gold or plastic jelewry. It can tarnish the ability. Now let it soak in some moonlight, and you have a wand.

In all honesty you can use almost any medium you want for your wand. Especially if you need one ad-hoc or in the moment. As a tool, the function of the wand is to represent will. More specifically, will being projected outward to a specific 'direction' (goal). If your intent of a working was like a shotgun, the wand focuses it into a laser beam.
As a symbol, it just has to be long enough to hold and point with. And though it helps if the rod is straight it doesn't have to be. It also does not have to be carved, runed, decorated, or super smooth. Ideally it should be of some sort of natural material, most magic-workers tend to advise against polymers like Resin or plastic because they are manufactured/artificial and also non-conductive. However there are even ways around that such as inserting gems/fem chips, copper or silver wire as a core or as a coil along the surface.
Feasibly you could use a wooden pencil in the moment, if it is what you have. Wood and charcoal (the pencil lead) are natural items and could be perceived symbolically as a rod and core to 'fire' your energy outward in a directed and focused way.
As far as a long-term tool or symbol of mastery, those are the ones you want to make special and your-own. When it is time and you are in the right frame of mind, that tool will find you. Sometimes as a gift, sometimes through deliberate search, and sometimes by picking up a stick that happens to catch your eye, and the moment it is in your hand you just decide ''This is my wand''. You will know when you have a long-term tool when you feel driven to make it yours.

I knew someone who used a toothbrush, and another who used a plastic Harry Potter wand [There's a case to be made about using plastic as it's ''Unnatural'' but if it works for you, use it] I don't own a wand and I've never used one. I use my Athame and/or my finger [and on occasion, a wooden spoon if I'm cooking] but my sister [who isn't a witch] owns a wand and had an incredible connection to her.
