I am curious on where this list of chakras Comes from. I've seen similar ideas from new-age writers in recent years, while Myself, I'm only familiar with the major seven within the body, and the lesser that dwell within the hands, feet, and otherwise where meridians cross or join.

I've always learned of Chakras as being a part of the etheric body, as it dwells within the physical one. I'd like to find out more on where these 'external' ones come from; ie what path or writers first brought forward these extended ideas.

Also, are these external chakras literal, or conceptual? Do they have a specific location like the ones within the body? I ask because some do not include a specific place other than essentially 'below the other one'. I'm finding if hard to relate to the need to recognize these indistinct, external points. They are interesting to consider... but without more information on where their concepts came from I'm finding it hard to connect with the idea.
