Magical Properties of Wood

Acacia Koa: It has both a masculine and a feminine side, almost completely separate. Masculine properties: The energy associated with the masculine aspects of this wood are duality and balance, like the tides. This energy is deeply connected with the ocean, which is alternately giving and destructive. To truly utilize the masculine properties of this wood, one must be able to recognize and become comfortable with the ebb and flow of its energy. Feminine properties: Centered on the element of fire, Koa in its feminine aspect brings creativity, beauty, and wisdom, and strength. It also brings a fiery energy, capable of destructive power or the power to overcome strife.

Yellow- Gold- Red- Pink- Brown African Blackwood: Draws off the element of earth, water, and sprit. Strongly aligned with Saturn and is known to block other energies. It represents the end of cycles and the energy of the underworld. This would be an excellent wood for blocking the energy of other magic, and communication with the dead. Magic related to death would be highly effective with this wood. It acts as a conduit between the physical and spiritual realms.

African Blackwood is an exotic wood native to Eastern Africa, and is also known as Mozambique Ebony or Senegal Ebony. It features are dark brown, even purplish heartwood with dark streaks. It is an extremely hard wood, strong and stiff, very stable, with a fine texture. African Blackwood is considered one of the world's finest woods for turning. It polishes very well to a smooth, lustrous finish.

Ailanthus, Copal Tree, Stinking Sumac, Swingle, Tree-of-Heaven: Can be used for both healing and poisoning spells. The pale yellow, close-grained and satiny wood of ailanthus has been used in cabinet work. Not easy to work with (it tends to warp quickly). Alder: Known as the wood of witches (along with Yew) or Battle Witch wood. Drawing off the element of fire, but also water and earth; Alder is a fast growing tree with a short life cycle. An excellent wood for resurrection spells and is the best choice for summoning and controlling the four winds, banishing and controlling elements. It has a fiery property lends courageousness and passion in your work.

Alder: Pale Yellow to Reddish Brown. It is easy to work and is a soft, relatively low-strength, straight-grained, even-textured wood. Works well with hand and machine tools, but sharp cutting edges need to be maintained to prevent tearing the grain.

Red Alder: Charm, leadership, bravery, blocking unwanted forces, spirituality, divination and healing. In Ireland, cutting down an Alder tree was once a punishable offense. Native Americans used Alder infusions to treat tuberculosis.

Alligator Juniper: An excellent healing wood; Alligator Juniper seeks a healer. It draws from fire.

Apple: An excellent wood for Divination. Wielders of divine conquests and fortune-telling are this woods choice but those wanting to cause harm to others should avoid it. It is feminine in nature and draws off of earth and water. It is also good for healing, love spells and remedial magic. Heartwood can vary from a light reddish or grayish brown to a deeper red/brown. The grain of Apple is sometimes seen with streaks of darker and lighter bands of color, similar to Olive. Sapwood is a pale cream color. Grain is straight (though on some sections of the tree it can also be wild) with a very fine, uniform texture, closely resembling Cherry. 

Ash: Known as the father of trees. If you seek knowledge, absorbing illness and healing spells, aiding in communication, Ash is your wood. It is often used for protection. Drawing its power from water, ash seeks a healing companion with focus and strength of purpose. ASH: Strong and Tough, Light in Color, Resembles Oak, but coarser grained and easier to work.

Aspen: Used in anti-theft spells, it was also planted in gardens and fields to protect the property from thieves. Place an aspen leaf under your tongue if you wish to become eloquent. Aspen provides protection from unwanted spirits and to help you release old fears. The bark of Aspen contains analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The wood has a fine uniform texture and is straight grained. Aspen does not split when nailed, it machines easily with a slightly fuzzy surface, and turns, bores, and sands well. The wood is light and soft, with low bending strength and stiffness, and medium shock resistance.

Australian Blackwood: Draws off the elements of earth, water, and wind. Represents strength and determination. This is a neutral wood, indifferent to White or Black Magic. It possesses both healing and destructive powers. Good for potion-making. Excellent for repelling or conjuring curses.

Avodire: Born from the element of water and thrives on the energy of the sun. A powerful male wood who seeks a creative companion with a vivid imagination. Used for defense and protection. Excellent for Conjuration spells. Blond with heavy figure, Pale yellow or cream, darkening with age to a golden yellow. Heartwood and sapwood usually look the same. Grain can be straight, wavy, or irregular and interlocked. Texture is fine, with a high natural luster, and small to medium-sized open pores.

Basswood: Light, Straight-grained and of fine texture. Easy to work. Excellent for carving, molding and toys.

Beech: A wood of femininity associated with elements of Air and Earth. Used in healing rituals but also love, friendship, peace, and romance spells. This wood is best for spiritual awakening and spiritual practices. Excellent for Binding Magic. Beech links us with past wisdom to provide answers in the present. The answers are already within; Beech can help you discover them. Typically has a pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. With a fine to medium grain texture; Beech has good workability and machines well but has a large amount of shrinkage. 

Berlinia: Mahogany color and grain. Birch: A sacred wood best used for cleansing rituals and expelling evil spirits. Those interested in the practice of white magic will find this wood is a wonderful companion, exemplary in healing. Excellent for protection spells. The Celtic wood of the New Year and new beginnings, Brooms were traditionally made of Birch twigs. Birch can help you sweep away negative energy, organize and calm the emotions. 

Birch: Heavy, tough and close grained. Very durable. 

Black Laurel: A powerful wood which draws off the element of fire and Saturn's energy. Known for its courage, passion, and strength. Use this wood for the absorption and destruction of negative energy. It excels in the reversal of negative spells. Excellent for repelling Dark Magic.

Black Limba: Draws off the element of earth. A strong woods used for defending and repelling dark magic or casting powerful hexes. A neutral wood indifferent to the will of its owner. Excellent for defensive spells, charms and hexes. Pale yellow to light brown with black streaks. The wood is relatively soft and easy to work. Medium coarse texture. Open pores require filling for a smooth surface. White limba is the same lightweight, extraordinarily decorative, and nice to work wood. Instead of sporadic black lines throughout, white limba is a uniform color devoid of black.

Black Poisonwood: Draws from the element of earth. A powerful combination of strength and versatility. Seeks a companion of strength and determination, however indifferent to its owner's will. Excellent for defensive spells, curses, or protective magic.

Blood Wood: It is a fierce companion for those of a passionate nature. Draws off the element of fire. Bloodwood is prized for its ability to harness any elemental energy. Recommended for one with experience and discipline. This is a wood of strength and energy. Will produce potent magic out of love or anger. Excellent for increasing magnetism in rituals. Beautiful Red Color

Bocote: Draws off the element of earth and sun. Ir seeks a creative companion, one of intelligence and imagination. Used in the power of persuasion, inspiration, concentration, and the power of the mind. This is a neutral wood, indifferent to the use of white or dark magic. Exemplary for Legilimency or Occlumency and also excellent for summoning magic, herb magic, and potions. Peaceful and positive, Bocote has a powerful spiritual energy valuable for identifying physical or psychic imbalances.

Bocote: Golden Brown with Dark Streaks.

Bubinga: A wood best used for enhancement and influence. Seeks a companion with passion and courage, and also one with spiritual power. Excellent for Legilimency. Strongly feminine, Bubinga is spiritual and nurturing. Wonderful for use when working with positive emotional energy.

Bubinga (African Rosewood): Fine tight grain and Reddish Brown with Purple Streaks. Highly endangered species. 

Buckeye: Draws off the element of earth. A wood of medicine, healing, and meditation. Also used for luck. Seeks a companion healer/witch doctor. Excellent for Banishing spells. Buckeye has traditionally been carried as a charm to bring luck or create success by naturally gathering together the right energies that can create positive circumstances.

Butternut: A male wood. Draws off the element of sun. Companion to the cosmic mind. Used for wealth, luck, and attraction. This wood is best for summoning and strength. Excellent for Divination.

Butternut: (White Walnut) Soft, beautiful grain and golden brown. Some contains worm holes. Sources say blight on this wood is causing it to become extinct like chestnut. 

Camatillo: Also known as Mexican Kingwood, has purple-ish heartwood and creamy white sapwood. It is very hard and dense and takes a high natural polish.

Canary Wood: Seeks a strong companion with the will to achieve, hope, and succeed. Used to encourage and motivate. This is a neutral wood, preferring neither white or dark magic. Also can be used as a source of control. Excellent for Charm work. Canary wood is spiritually inspiring and an excellent tool for exploring the non-physical worlds.

Canary Wood: Yellow with Red Tints Nice Grain Features Catawba or Catalpa: used by native Americans in the American South as a poultice and purgative from leaves and bark. The wood's unique properties make it excellent for carving and boat building.

 

Cedar: Draws off the element of sun and fire. Used for influence and purification. Strengthens psychic power and is often a tool for healing. Seeks a white magic companion. Excellent for protection. Cedar is naturally resistant to pestilence and decay. Aromatic Cedar is associated with wisdom and strength and these qualities aid the user in lifting the veil imposed upon our perception of reality. Cedar: (Aromatic Red): Light, fine texture, nice aroma. Cedar (Alaskan Yellow) - Pacific Northwest: Alaskan Yellow Cedar has always had medicinal uses for Native Americans and is often burned in rituals of purification. Cedar (Lebanese) Israel: Used to build the Temple of Solomon, the sacred Cedar of Lebanon is a purifier and protector. Cedar (Spanish) Brazil: Spanish Cedar is actually a very hearty Mahogany and shares that woods earthy traits, but is also spiced with an energy that dares exploration into the unknown. Cedar (Western Red) - Pacific Northwest: Western Red Cedar is a life giver to the local Native Americans.It was used to provide shelter, create baskets for fishing and food gathering, medicinal purposes, and was even as clothing.

Chakte Coc/Redheart: Draws off the element of earth and water. Containing an overall bright and carefree energy, redheart is an excellent wood for those seeking to be able to focus more on the "here and now" rather than dwelling on past or possible future events. It allows one to follow their whims, set aside their fears, and move their life in an overall positive direction. It does not distract one from real threats, but rather removes the fear and doubt that can cloud our judgment and make us imagine things worse than they may actually be. This wood will aid a person in finding their personal truth, free of self-deception. Redheart is a resilient wood that is good at both conducting and holding energy. Redheart is a dense fine textured hardwood from Central America with a beautiful red heartwood color. As with many red colored woods such as Paduak and Bloodwood, Redheart will oxidize to a brown color if not protected by a UV blocking finish.

Chakte Viga: Tropical hardwood from Mexico. The heartwood color varies slightly from pale to rich reddish orange. Chakte Viga is sometimes referred to as Paela. The grain is typically straight, but can interlocking. It is reported to have good tonal qualities and is popular in both instrument building and wood turning. The wood can darken with exposure to light.

Chechen: enhances your spiritual strength to overcome internal conflicts. It allows you to see what you mask from yourself. An exotic Mexican wood with a wide range of color variation from dark chocolate to light butterscotch colors. Chechen has an irregular grain pattern, and coupled with the color variety it makes fantastic finished pieces. Chechen is also hard and dense, which allows the wood to polish to a high sheen without effort.

Cherry: A wood of femininity. Draws off the element of earth. Used for healing, romance, and Binding spells. Seeks a harmonic companion. Excellent for Divination. Well grounded, cherry keeps us in the here and now and promotes rationally intuition action rather than emotionally related decisions. Strong, hard, nice grain that finishes well.

Chestnut: Herbalists use Chestnut to help rid the body of toxins. A wand made of Chestnut can aid one to banish negativity and cleanse the home. Chestnut: Has a coarse texture with a beautiful gold-ish-brown color. Very stable wood that is lighter then normal. Most Chestnut lumber is reclaimed material.

Cocobolo: Draws off the element of fire. Excels in the application of Moon magic. Seeks a companion of strength and stamina. Used for stimulation and protection. Excellent for defensive magic. The wood is very durable and strong, with a fine texture. It is extremely beautiful, ranging in color from dark red to reddish brown, with an irregular grain pattern. Cocobolo has fantastic working characteristics, making it a favorite for turning and carving, and finishes very smoothly. Variegated Orange, Red, Yellow

Coyote: Draws off the element of earth. A neutral wood that can be used for healing, summoning, and Herb Magic. Excellent for Potions.

Curupay: A very strong, dense, and hard wood that surprisingly decent to work with and looks incredible with a clear finish. The wood often displays dark, or nearly black, lines and irregular stripes which makes it nice for fine woodwork pieces.

Cypress: Positive and soothing, Cypress is useful during times of grief or difficult transitions. Soft and very weather resistant.

Dogwood: The wood's name "dogwood" also carries associations with the Irish hero Cuchullain, whose name meant "the dog of Chullain" referring to his loyalty. This gives the wood magical links to the warrior heroism and superhuman physical prowess of the hero, and links to domesticated dogs, their healing and protection and their loyalty and affection too. Magical operations especially applicable to Osier include: magick of flowering; evocation of one's Ancestors; renewal of cycles of fertility; consecration of ritual or hearth fires; giving of comfort or healing, and spells of banishment and protection. Wishes, secrets, loyalty and protection. The fire of passion, desire and will. It is associated with fertility and sexual attraction, happiness and comfort. Dense and fine-grained, dogwood timber is highly prized for making loom shuttles, tool handles and other small items that require a very hard and strong wood.

Ebony/Gaboon Ebony: This wood draws from the deeper levels of the mind. A powerful wood used for the defense, reversal, and dispelling of dark magic. Combined with the force of all the elements earth, fire, wind and water, this is a truly diverse tool. Excellent for defensive magic. Ebony is considered to be the most powerful of the magical woods. Gabon Ebony is considered to be the most powerful of the magical woods. It is protective and non-discriminating towards the user. A very dense wood

Elder: A masculine wood. Draws off the elements of earth and water. Elder is a sacred wood, and should only be used for white magic. Seeks a companion for healing and protection. This is a powerful wood for defensive magic. Excellent for Banishment spells.

Elm: A wood of femininity. It draws off the element of earth and is a strong, neutral wood that can be used for protection or hexes. It seeks a companion of strength and is excellent for destructive spells, protection, and defensive magic. Elm is associated with death and rebirth. Mixtures of green, red, brown and gold blazing wych elm has a chatoyancy that is only surpassed by the finest koa.

Eucalyptus: Draws off the element of water. A feminine wood commonly used for healing, health and protection. One of the strongest healing woods known; the energy of this wood is good and pure, clean like the earth from which it is born. It is excellent for Moon Magic. Coarse and open texture. Though the straight grain with fiddle back or curly figure is impressive, it's difficult to plane (which is typical of figured woods). Otherwise the wood responds to machining and hand tools with very little difficulty. Its color is pale brown to light brown, somewhat silver or gray.

Fir: An immortal evergreen, Fir is protective of those who use it wisely. Fir is one of the nine sacred woods burned on the sabbat fire.

Goncalo Alves: Full of positive, but not healing energy, Goncalo Alves seems best suited for divination.

Hackberry: A tree with many practical mundane uses, Hackberry can guide us wisely through times of transition and inspire creativity. Hackberry is creamy white and sometimes can take on streaks of black or black line spalting. It is a good turning wood that is strong and durable and sands easily.

Hawthorn: A masculine wood that draws off the element of air. It seeks a companion in search of power and strength. Use this wood for protection and defensive work. Harness the power of lightning and use it to spark creativity and self development. It is an excellent wood for charms and concealment magic.

Hazel: Hazel was the most common wood used in Celtic traditions for wands and divining rods. It has excellent healing and protective qualities, a bringer of positive change. Hazel can be used for almost all purposes, especially workings that involve seeking the truth and gaining information. It is not very suitable for power-oriented spells.

Hickory: In touch with nature, this wood draws from the elements of earth and wind. It creates balance and nourishment and seeks a companion with good intentions. Excellent for spirituality; Hickory is full of fire energy and useful in finding direction and acquisition. In all the world there is not a wood comparable to hickory for strength, toughness, and elasticity.

Holly: A symbol of masculine energy, it draws off the element of fire. It is a powerful wood used for healing and protection. Holly needs a partner of strength and goodwill and is excellent for defensive magic, animal work, and protection magic.

American Holly: The whitest wood known, with white sapwood and ivory-white heartwood. Uniform texture and close grained. Dyed it is a substitute for Ebony.

Hububali: Heartwood is a light red to brown, attractively figured with narrow to wide darker stripes and iridescence. Grain is straight, sometimes interlocked or wavy. Ipe: Draws from the elements earth and water. Used for healing, protection, growth and luck rituals. Achieve success with this wood as your companion. Excellent for renewal spells. Greenheart (Ipe): Also known as Ironwood, Olive brown with light and dark streaks.

Iroko: Iroko is widely revered in African culture connecting the sky and the earth. It is also used in ship-building and strongly related to Neptune and the energies of the sea. Iroko: Golden Brown, excellent substitute for Teak Jatoba: Salmon-red color, hard and strong excellent for furniture and flooring.

Katalox: Grounding yet insightful, Katalox can aid in balancing strong emotions to clear your path to understanding. This wood is naturally dark purple in color. Kingwood: The primary energies of this wood are strength and protection. It is associated with the very assertive masculine and the warrior-feminine. It will block out unwanted energy, forming an impenetrable protective barrier. This wood brings with it the ability to exert one's will upon the world, creating needed or desired change. The power of this wood blasts away all ambiguity. It will allow one to discover their true spiritual path, locking in only the most sincere beliefs, allowing the rest to fall away. It clarifies confusion. This wood is an excellent healing wood, closely tied with willpower. It would also be excellent for luck magic or divination. Also excellent for curses or other offensive magic, this is not a wood for novices or the untrustworthy. Variegated Colors Range from Black to Violet Brown Kou: Draws off the elements of fire and wind. This is a neutral wood, preferring neither White nor Dark Magic. Used for defensive spells or casting hexes. Excellent for repelling destructive spells or conjuring curses. Koa represents the full circle of birth, destruction and rebirth. 

Lacewood: Lacewood is full of positive energy, lucky, and useful in divination. Lati (White Wenge): Nice Blond color with Wenge grain. Louro Prato: Walnut color, lots of grain. Leopard Wood: Draws heavily from the element of earth. Seeks a partner of strength and creativity. Used for protection and creation. Excellent for opportunity spells. Leopard Wood/Lacewood: Spectacular Grain.

Gold- Reddish Brown Lignum Vitae: This wood has a profoundly positive energy. The overall energy of the wood can be summed up as "the power and strength of goodness." Its strong connections with the sun, Jupiter, and luck energy make the wood an ideal tool for any worker of positive magic. The energy about the wood is very healing, in both physical and spiritual matters. The energies within the wood would also be excellent for divining information from far away as well as close to home. This wood represents the end of strife and the beginning of a new, positive, cycle. The greatest legend about this wood is that Merlin the Wizard carried a staff and/or wand made from Lignum Vitae. This legend appears in both literature and ancient writings about the legend of Camelot. If true, it is hardly surprising. The energy within the wood is perfectly suited to a great man such as Merlin. The hardest, densest wood in the world, Lignum Vitae means "long life" in Latin. This tree is also called the "Tree of Life" as well as "Iron Wood." The wood is so dense and heavy that it will not even float in water. It comes with a long history and legend. This naturally green wood has been used for time untold in construction due to the fact that it is so hard and dense. Because it has a large amount of resin within it as well as its density, it is naturally lubricated and was thus used as ball bearings on ships. Lignum vitae is reddish brown when freshly cut, with pale yellow sapwood. As it oxidizes, the color turns to a deep green, often with black details. The grain is highly interlocked, making it difficult to work with edge tools, but it machines well and takes a high polish. It is a remarkably good wood for turning.

Locust (Black): Protection, binding, physical enchantments, prosperity and strength. The wood is extremely hard, resistant to rot, and very long lasting.

Locust (Honey, Pink): Protective and strong, Honey Locust can be challenging to work with. A mighty wand of protection and bindings. Use while working with the fairy realm. Some use this wood with spells that deal with beauty and physical appearances. It is strongest during the dark of the moon.

Madrone: Madrone was used for medicinal purposes by the Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest.In the forest it is more resistant to fire than surrounding trees and thrives once the flames wane. Mahogany: This wood is in touch with the elements of fire and earth. Well balanced, this wood seeks a partner with strength and energy. Excellent for protection spells.

Mahogany (Honduran): Focused on fertility and growth, Honduran Mahogany has a strong bond with Earth Energy

Mahogany (Santos): Santos Mahogany is earthy, yet enhances our intuitive abilities and ability to explore our potential.

Mahogany (Genuine): Light to dark reddish brown. Fine grained with many cross grains. Can be worked easily.

Makore: A powerful wood which feeds off the elements of fire and earth. Requires a companion of strength. Can be used to improve life or destroy it. Excellent for white or dark magic.

Maple: A peaceful wood used for purity and healing. Seeks a strong, devoted companion who cares for others. Excellent for cleansing spells. Maple reveals the options - even those that are hidden in plain sight - which lay before you. It enables you to make sound choices rather than rely on blind luck.

Maple (Hard): Very dense, tight grain and strong. Excellent for turning.

Maple (Soft): Light in color and firm texture. Mesquite: Draws from the element of water and earth. A feminine wood used for nurturing and providing. Excellent for protection spells. Somewhat straight grained but often wavy.

Monterillo: This is a rare wood, not often dared by wand makers because of it's density and strength. Draws from the elements of earth and fire. Represents strength, courage, and determination. Although it is used for defensive magic, there is a dangerous power to this wood that can unleash deadly curses if wielded to do so. Excellent for repelling hexes or conjuring Dark Magic.

Mulberry: In ancient Chinese tradition the hermaphroditic Mulberry tree represents the beginning of time, before the separation of male/female yin/yang energies. Mulberry can aid in re-establishing this connection. Myrtle: Myrtle helps by balancing the energy in ourselves or our situation. It has an honest energy that requires forthright intentions in your work.

Narra (Beeswing): Related to Paduak, Beeswing Narra is powerful like Ebony, yet a little more difficult to control because its energy constantly shifts. Narra is more feminine than its cousin and can be a potent healer in the right hands.

Oak: Known as Wizard Wood, this wood is perhaps the strongest. Draws off the element of fire, as well as lightning. Seeks a powerful companion, a guardian and liberator. Excellent for protection, defensive, prosperity, sacrifice and power house spells. Robust and true, Oak is strongly rooted in the earth and easily channels natural life energies. Slow and steady growing, Oak helps one intuitively focus on the task at hand.

Oak (Red): Very heavy, hard, strong and durable.

Oak (White): Tough and durable.

Olive - Italy: Sacred to Athena, used to anoint kings, and a symbol of peace in Christian philosophy, Olive lends great wisdom and healing energy to your craft. Olive (Holy Land) - Israel: Crafted from wood imported from the Holyland, this Olive wand springs from the cradle of today's western religions.

Osage Orange: Most in tune with the mind. Seeks a companion of intelligence and creativity. Used commonly with Occlumency and Legilimency. Excellent for repelling and protection spells. Named Bois d'Arc by French settlers and Osage Orange by English after the Great Plains Tribe and the tree's large fruit, this wood is extremely spiritual in nature, especially in matters dealing with earth energy.

Hedge-apple,Horse-apple, Bois D'Arc, Bodark, or Bodock Paduak: Draws from the element of fire. It symbolizes power and strength and is a dangerous wood in the wrong hands. Used for vitality and control. Excellent for Summoning and Bonding Magic and powerful like Ebony, yet a little more difficult to control because of its constantly shifting energy, Paduak can be a potent healer in the right hands.

Paduak: African padauk is bright red in color, deepening in time to a very deep red. Usually fairly dense and heavy, coarse textured, with prominent open pores. Density varies as a result of growing conditions, generally machines well regardless of density, but the fine dust can be irritating.

Palm (Black): Strongly related to water, Black Palm is naturally aligned with, and enhances magical energies.

Palm (Red): Palms are excellent conductors of surrounding energies. Red Palm lends the practitioner a touch of intuition as well.

Pau Amarillo: aka: Brazilian Satinwood, Yellowheart Pear: Pear wood is extremely earth-centric energy, very grounded. Pear wood is also inspiring and creative. This type of wood is best used for healing, and will appeal mostly to those who have a passion to heal. This wood would not be useful for spiritual exploration, such as astral projection, divination, etc., but is extremely useful in earth-centric matters. It brings a creative, inspiring energy to the home. This wood is excellent for use with money and prosperity spells.

Pequia Marfim: Yellow color. Persimmon: Protection, love, healing and luck. Eating unripened persimmon fruit have been known to cause bezoars. It is believed that one can forecast winter snowfall by cutting open a persimmon and 'reading' it's seeds. Persimmon: Color is creamy white to light yellow or grayish-brown. Peruvian Alder: Cherry color. Peruvian Walnut: Dark, very little sap.

Pucte: Yellow/brown color, nice grain, very dense.

Gum: Wide sapwood is whitish to light pink or tan color, and is sometimes referred to as sapgum or sweetgum. Heartwood is gray to reddish brown, and is commonly referred to as redgum. Heartwood with darker black streaks is called figured redgum. Quartersawn pieces have a ribbon-stripe appearance. Grain is interlocked, with a very fine, uniform texture. Good natural luster, this wood has sometimes been called satin walnut.

Redheart: See Chakte Coc. Redwood: Draws from the element of fire. It is used for healing and remedial work. Seeks a companion with a spiritual purpose. Excellent for medicinal spells. One of the largest trees in the world, Redwood connects heaven and earth. It is a symbol of endurance and strength for those seeking to connect the physical and etheric realms. Rhododendron is said to help with the process of focusing on knowledge and enhances one's awareness of enemies. The wood is very hard and is occasionally used for specialty wood products.

Burmese Rosewood: Like most rosewoods, heartwood has variegated colors, from burgundy to light brown. Hard and dense with medium fine texture and maintains its color well.

Bolivian Rosewood: This wood's energy is primarily feminine, and focused on spiritual, intuitive health and beauty. Bolivian Rosewood is motherly, spiritual, and nourishing. It lends a boost to intuitive thought and feeling, and is thus excellent in divination and scrying. A healing wood, rosewood can be used in all healing rituals but is especially effective in spiritual healing. In matters dealing with beauty, rosewood can be very effective. Carried or worn as a charm, this wood will enhance female beauty and feminine grace. It would be good for love spells as well, but only those conducted with maturity and wisdom. Frivolous energies will not be enhanced by this wood.

Snakewood: Named for its mottled, snakeskin appearance, Snakewood was also used as a remedy for fever and snakebite by native South America peoples. It has a unique healing energy. Sourwood: The wood is heavy, hard, very close-grained and compact. It is brown, sometimes tinged with red.

Sycamore: Slow growing, but able to thrive in harsh climates, Sycamore evokes patience and an ability to overcome adversity.

Sycamore: Gray-Brown-Orange Tamboti/African Sandalwood: is a heavy, strong, dense exotic wood. It has an oily nature, making sanding difficult, but does polish well and can be varnished. It is a popular wood for turning and furniture.
