When I started out with becoming a practitioner, i was told to start off with learning and understanding the elements and their correspondence, and how to use it in making/casting spells. Luckily for me I came across this wounderful book by Scott Cunningham called "Earth, Air, Fire, and Water: more techniqes of natural magic". Its a great book with tons of info, i will offer you the most valuable info such as the 4 elements and their correspondence and for the rest i recomend getting the book your self (or mailing me).

i will post one element at a time, first will be water

Basic Nature: flowing, purifying, healing, soothing, loving
Type of Energy: receptive
Color: blue (from hue of deep water)
Place: pools, lakes, ponds, lakes, streams, springs, beaches, pools, bathtubs, showers, steam rooms, fountains, bedroom (for sleep)
Rituals: purification, love, psychic awareness, dreams, sleep, peace marriage, friendship
Ritual Forms: dilution, placing into water, washing away, bathing
Herbs: aquatic such as water lilies and seaweed; fleshy as in succulents and lettuce; loving, as in a rose and gardenia; generally flowers
Stones: transparent or translucent, as in amethyst and aqua marine; blue as in tourmaline
Metals: mercury (quicksilver), silver, copper
Musical Instruments: cymbal, bell, all resonant instruments
