When crops failed or long severe winters exhausted food supplies, Indian and pioneers alike, were often saved from starvation by the use of Sweet Elm Bark. Sweet Elm or Slippery Elm bark as it is better known today is obtained by the trees which during the Indians rule over America Sweet Elm was widely spread in the eastern parts.

A thin layer of inner bark is the part used for food and medicine. Infused with water, Slippery Elm Bark becomes very mucilaginous, soothing and healing properties. The Bark is identified as being harmless to infants and those of great age.

You would be amazed what they used this herb for, pregnant woman made tea out of it to help calm the kicking baby. Some doctors used it to treat burns and even ulcer's.

The powder mixed with milk is wholesome and very nutritious. It is easily digested and owing to the fact that it absorbs noxious gases, it is useful for inducing restful sleep when taken before bed. Sweet Elm was used for treating terrible stomach aches and constipation.
