Energy. All workings take energy to manifest, the more energy you add into a working, the better it will likely manifest within your life. Alongside this you have to put in the mundane energy to receive more luck in one way or another.
Magick isn't for nothing, it still takes work, both energetically and mundanely, and this is more often than not, the ''price''.
Are you referring to ''equivalent exchange'' or the belief in Doctor Strange where you need to keep balance [give someone good luck by taking away someone elses] it doesn't really happen with real magick. Yes, there are a variety of beliefs on the subject, but not a universally agreed upon rule. Karma is a popular belief. Law of attraction is another. Personally I believe in casting spells when necessary while infusing my daily routine with magick [a blessing in the morning, a beauty chant while washing my face, protection symbol when locking my door, so on] when asking for larger items like a new lover or job, it is wise to give thanks [especially if you called on a deity] but you won't be punished exactly if you ask for a bunch of things. Some feel the universe or deities will step in to teach you a lesson when you are too greedy, others don't. Some feel the reason a spell would fail if you asked for too much was because you weren't ready yet to receive the results, or you didn't put in enough energy. [theres also the belief that you were hired thanks to the spell, this taking the job away from someone else, if you want to feel bad about your success anyway] personally if you took the time to reflect and ask yourself if it's really worth it, thinking of the best and worse outcomes, and still choose to cast, then you're fine. You need to accept your actions, good or bad, you wanted it.
