There are two reasons that position is recommended: comfort and distraction.

Lying on one's back, with the head at a proper angle, means that breathing is easy (for most, granted not all, folks), and that a person can lie with no part of their body touching another. That is, it can mean there is as little physical sensation as possible.

Less distraction by one's actual body means less distraction from meditation, and better success with astral projection.

Yes: That position is not the best for everyone. Some suggest sitting upright in a chair, but if someone's body relaxes beyond a point, their head will droop, distracting them.

To some people Its more relaxing than sitting in a meditative position with you back straight causing it to become stiff and start to hurt. But when that does happen its only because that person is in the wrong position and is meditating wrong. Me personally i lay on my back, but everyone is diffrent.

I have never Astral Project-ed before so I have no idea if what I'm saying is true, but I have heard (at least for some) that if you lay on your left side you cannot Astral Project. I'm not sure if that helps and it might be some weird myth; but, maybe?

I wish you luck in your quest find a more comfortable solution! :)
