Smoke is often used for divination purposes. This is a form of pyromancy, but a very specific one at that. Practitioners would often stare in the flames in order to recieve visions from higher realms(i.e Astral Planes, Spirit World). I used to use it as a scrying method on occasion. Regarding smoke, I would say that images could be discerned from scrying into it. However, you must already have induced a deep meditative state. Smoke is fleeting, so there will only be a limited amount of time to see anything. Divination by smoke is called "Capnomancy". You could build a fire and enter a meditative state while gazing into it. Ask yes or no questions and enterprit the movement of the smoke as you wish. Or perhaps(using a candle) passing a piece of paper quickly through the flame while asking questions could reveal answers. You would enterprit the symbolism of the carbon marks on the paper. Ash is also another method of pyromancy, but that can be saved for another discussion.

Generally speaking, smokes are fairly common in most formal magical processes so as far as I am aware, it is treated as a tool to be used within many practices. It can be used as incense for a variety of purposes from cleansing the area (IE; Smudging), representing the element of air, being used as a symbolic messenger or guiding path, to methods of divination.

To that end, if you wanted to use smoke and smoke sources within your magic you can adapt it in to most other workings fairly easily. As a symbol of air you can use the rising smoke from incense. You can also declare a magical intent in writing and then burn the paper to release the energies out from the spell and into motion, carried in the smoke and on the winds. If you can get or make smokey candles, you can use them as well for things like divination by observing the behavior of the smoke. (If not, neutral incense like sandalwood is a good stand-by) Any time you want to send outward an intent, or create a magical bridge or path, or set a guiding trail between the physical and non.

Its interesting that you ask about using smoke in spellwork. I myself work best with the energies associated with the element of air. Over time, i have refined my visualizations to work best with the air element, causing a good ammount of my visuals to include blowing columns/clouds of "smoke". Considering the aspect of air, just like maximizing the effectiveness of working with the energies of any element, one may deduce, eventually, a list of qualities of said element, and know the things therein are likely to be effective.. Good luck!
Blessed, we.
