Take some time and experience each element.

For water go swimming or take a bath, while in the water, just experience it, feel it, smell it, taste it.

For air, stand outside and feel the air as it touches your body, see it as it plays through the grass and the trees. Stick your tongue out and taste it, smell it.

For fire feel the heat, smell the smoke, look at the colors. Think of all the ways that fire manifests in your life.

For Earth, sit on the ground, bury your hands or feet in the dirt. Feel the land beneath you. Smell it, taste it.

Elemental magic, like most other magic, is about forming a personal connection between yourself and the entity or quality you want to work with. Just like with choosing to follow a particular deity or pantheon, study the element, its nature and symbolism. (Both positive and negative. Or if you prefer, additive and destructive.) Then apply that information to your magic and daily life.

For example Fire is a source of light and heat, and through that it provides protection from both beasts and the environment. But if one isn't mindful of fire it will spread and consume things you don't want it to. Symbolically fire can represent protection, bravery, aggression, inspiration, guiding light/the beacon, rage, consumption, destruction, and purification. Fire tends to mainly be a representation of the movement of energy, and active change between states of being.

So you would call on these qualities from the element of fire if they were desired within your magic. But it also acts as a caution towards temperament and discipline, as fire without control becomes just as powerful a destructive force as it is a protective one. burning away everything in its path until it eventually destroys itself by consuming everything that feeds it until it starves.
