The myth about vampires began because people in the Middle Ages did not understand what happened when the human body was dead and buried and mistook the normal processes of death for the body becoming a vampire. Vampires in such folklore were feared and hated. Then along came people such as Anne Rice and the woman who wrote the Twilight series and all of a sudden vampires became glamorous and sparkly. But these are fantasy novels and Hollywood films, not the truth.

But..but...but...:) no you're right. I personally am happy that beings that have superhuman capabilities, kill humans to survive, etc..don't exist as I can only imagine the chaos that would occur if such beings existed. Thank you for putting together this research as I know many wish the Hollywood vampires were real for various reasons.
The fairy tales of vampires, goblins, ghouls, demons and creatures according to region were very rich and widely used used to explain what was misunderstood, and to also keep children from misbehaving, or sneaking off at night, or whatever it might be.
If you don't smarten up, the Devil and his demons will ride in and take me and all of your brothers and sisters away and you'll be stuck living here with a demon/If you go out at night a vampire might suck your blood.
It's just fantasy, and it's made some Hollywood people some good money.
