In some circles, it is believed that it is a time when spirits, entities, etc tend to be the most active and at their strongest. Usually around 3am. I've seen it most often mentioned on those occult/ghost hunting shows on Destination America and the like.
As stated above it's the belief that spiritual entities are their most active and strongest. There are many different sources that say many different things about the witching hour. There's a source that calls it the " Devil's Hour " and it's explanation was that since Jesus died at 3 p.m. , 3 a.m. would be the opposite, there for the " Devil's hour ". It also explains that demons are at it's strongest and tend to attack more at 3a.m. and the human body's energy is lower, there for more vulnerable than at any other time. That's why many ( not all ) Terror movies that include paranormal activity always, at some point, show a clock with it's pointers on 3 a.m..
Many people believe in this, many people don't. I, personally don't.
The 'Witching Hour' is often associated with many people waking up- or having disturbed sleep during this time of night, 3AM. Though it has been allocated to what Agiel and Misanthropy have previously mentioned, there is also a physical explanation for the phenomena of feeling: weakness, imbalance, or the inability to rest.
Studies suggest that during this time of night, the 'ambrosial hours', our bodies become stressed. Thus- we secrete hormones such as adrenaline. This is also the time of night where our liver's go under glycogen regeneration, stress/adrenaline then producing more glycogen. So our body and mind feeling restless and sometimes even on the 'look-out'.
However, this does not discredit the supernatural phenomena some might experience during these hours, as there are experts from both scientific and paranormal that have made note on the subject.
