Greek Pagans~

Won't you grace me with your presence, insight, and friendship!

I'd like it very much if you would tell me of your choice of deity, what drew you to them, the signs they sent to you, your favorite story about them, the unique way you pray to them, the sort of offerings you give to them.

I ask because I think I might have found my deity in the Greek gods and wanted to know of your experiences.

I do not understand why people like the Greek Deities...particularly the Olympians. Many are alright but the Olympian Deities...not so much.

Those are some of the most petty , jealous and horrible deities that one can find. Their actions and character leaves much to be desired. No offense to Greek Pagans of course.

Some people that worked with the Olympian Deities comment that the deities's followers are only treated especially nicely when something is required of them and the deities themselves sometimes get upset when they work with another deity.

While deities from other pantheons have done some less than desirable actions and shown some traits that are not so nice , there are usually reasons that excuse them a fair bit or even justify them. It is sometimes a bit "hand wavy" though.

Most Olympian Deities however...I find myself finding them as one of the more flawed beings out there , no better than an average ass-hat human. I find that most of the Olympian Deities are only better than an average human in terms of power alone.

That's the impression I get from briefly studying Greek Mythology anyway.

Hm, that's interesting. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the matter.

I've read a lot of the wonderful things they have done and can't help but feel so emotionally touched by some of them.

Like the man Ares slew because he had attacked his daughter.

To me, I don't think the deities are meant to be moral role models, at least from my experience/knowledge. That being said, I prefer Gaia and Hecate, who I honestly only honour as Greek deities vaguely because Hecate is believed to be older than the Greek pantheon and Gaia has very little involvement in the stories and other deities in general (she's quite a remote deity.) I tend to acknowledge the fact that the mythological stories of the Gods are just that - stories, but still I get that they aren't exactly very moral deities. It honestly depends on who you work with.

*to be fair, though, Gaia is the sort of great primordial "mother" deity and origin of many of the Greek Gods. I, however, see her as a part of a greater energy of nature, and so my honouring of her as a Greek deity is slightly down-tuned (but still present).

They are not all bad I suppose. No being is. Quite a few of them are alright. Some did cause a lot of problems though.

While some stories of them are alright , many of them paint Greek Deities in a poor light.

I myself agree that most deities are not meant to be moral role models , rather being a personification of an aspect of power.

However one can only go so far with that reasoning to justify less-than-pleasent actions before I find that it becomes simply distasteful.

Killing thousands to millions of humans in a flood , draught or hurricane is perfectly alright as that it is a representation of the deities's aspect. To me , that is perfectly acceptable.

Cursing a beautiful woman because she happened to be raped in your temple , turning her into a ugly snake-headed lady and turns people into stone when gazed upon...yeah..not so much.

In the end , I still treat these mythological stories as just stories. That does not stop it from showing the being that was described in a poor light though.

Oho. It seems I upset you a bit. Of course , I apologize for that. Not my intention to offend anyone. There is a reason why I started off my initial posting as "I do not understand why..."

I did give my opinion on Greek Deities based mostly on the literary tradition , none of the fellow practitioners I know in person work with Greek Deities and I suppose you are absolutely correct that I did buy into another's practitioners personal gnosis too easily. I have never worked with Greek Deities either.

You absolutely hit the nail on those points. I give you that.

If one take away most of the stories involving them , handwaving them away (which I find reasonably acceptable and can be done) , then most of what remains of them are nigh perfect representations of various aspects. Still kinda handwavy though , but I suppose it is alright.

Many Hellens find moral lessons and deep thought in the mythology rather than as "law" of what happened in the past. Also, (more on topic of the original statement) I find myself more drawn to Apollon, Eros/Aphrodite, and recently Pan.

Apollon is a good deity to be associated with (that is if He finds favor with you.) I'm also available for discussion about the matter of Hellenismos or Greek Polytheism.

I personally follow the greek gods and have found it very rewarding. Not only are they widely known and are easy to find information on, they also just click with me. You should follow whatever deity you think clicks for you. Paganism is very personal religion and so if you want to follow the greek gods, go for it.
