I know you don't believe in spells Brysing, but personally, I think it is a much more viable belief than, say, vampires. You can't prove them to be fake, and many people can and will share personal experiences with them.

A skeptic will never have enough evidence, while a believer will have more than enough.

The reason I don't believe in spells is because,it seems to me, to be pure coincidence when they "appear" to work. Every discussion indicates that the spell will not work, of itself. The caster has to "help it along".
And when it doesn't work, the excuse is "Oh,it takes time.Even a year". Or you did it wrong. Or you didn't have enough faith. Or you used the wrong ingredients.
A youngster casts a spell for money.Gets a job. At the end of the week he gets money. So the spell worked? No it didn't! He got paid for a week's work!
The young man casts a spell for rain, and it rains within an hour; or the next day; or the next month; so the spell worked?
To me, a spell is just a wish; like a prayer. It's a ritual wish.
And sometimes, purely coincidentally, the wish comes true. But not very often!
Did the ancient witches cast spells? Or were the mystic words, and the mystic "signs", merely to keep the real magic hidden;secret. After all, it was how a witch earned her living. And some witches were outright fraudulent; taking great sums of money from their victims for "casting spells".
It's like the old joke, when the man complains to God that he had prayed every day for fifty years and had never won the Lottery. And God says,
"Meet me half way. But a ticket!"
