My advice would be the odd not to try so hard, just simply go with it, allow mediation to occur and for your mind to gradually get calmer and your sense of focus to become more and more internal. Forcing anything in terms of meditation and magic is just not the best way to go about things. Just naturally unfolding is the best way to go about it.
There are many different methods of meditation out there, I personally enjoy focusing on the breath whilst repeating a mantra mentally in time with the breath. Others favour focusing on an object, concrete or visualised, and still others prefer to do absolutely nothing and simply be.
I think trying different meditation techniques, regularly at the same time of the day (pref. first thing or last) will yield the results you want.
