Usually it can be much more complex than that. I've seen in native culture fasting before hand and going out into the wild with minimum clothing and spend a day in meditation. Other methods have been hallucinagens but that is a bad idea.
For me the spirit animal/guide came in meditation. I simply asked before the meditation for the spirit animal guide to come to me, and there it was? mind you it wasn't what i was expected at all, i was expecting a bear or a wolf instead i got an armadillo?

They tend to come when they are needed. Mine comes in dreams. Before and as you are falling asleep, try emptying your mind, thinking only of meeting your guide. It may not come the first time, so keep on trying. Don't force it. Become relaxed, and have that thought of meeting as you fall asleep. This is what I did to "meet" mine. Now he comes as needed.
You can have more than one spirit animal and it is okay if it is quick the more time you have to think the more you try to rationalize the results and over think things. This is instict, doesn't need a second thought.
This is probably different to how alot of other people work out what the spirit animal/guide is; but I just felt a strong connection with the wedge tail eagle and I see them all the time... So yeah! That's how I found out mine! :)
I know mine is cats. I've seen them everywhere, all the time, since I was little. They are always attracted to me, and me to them, even the outside feral cats. One of my friends said she thought I was a cat. :)
We have rescued several cats, and every time I sleep, I am literally surrounded by cats, pillow, sides, feet, everywhere, and they seem to need to touch my body while we are all sleeping.
