Gamatria is when you convert hebrew letters to numbers.
When John wrote Revelations on Patmos he used gamatria.
The number "666" translates to Nero Caesar or thereabout. Nero Caesar declared himself to be a god. Hence the idea of man claiming to be god being the beast. He also persecuted a lot of christians and tried to force them to sacrifice when conducting business in the forum. A typical roman forum was used for conducting business. There was a statue of the emperor...and when you entered the forum you were expected to throw incense on a fire to acknowledge the divinity of the emperor.
Hence the whole wearing the mark of the beast and so on. Christians wouldnt do this and were persecuted for this reason.
John was writing about his own times and in his own context. Does revelations contain visions of the future...i dont know...but i do know John was writing about his own times.
As far as the bible and satan go, the book of Job, whom some believe predates most of the OT refers to him there...apparently before the "Fall"....or whatever. The term is used in the NT too. I learned that it meant "the enemy" but there were connotations to it as well.

I'm not up to push my faith here, I'm a spiritual Satanist, for me Bible and Christianity ultimately becomes fake, Christians will have faith that their God created the world and all living beings, I will think that Satan has created everything , for Christians we Satanist will become fake ones and for us the Christians ultimately biggest lies ever, this will continue forever.... .. In the end the God who will make all his peoples happy forever will be left with the most higher number of followers that's our side or sure, and in the opposition the one who will serve pain will lead up to be perished...you know every religion has their own holy books and texts about creation of the world and life, no one has the answer which is real, it's being said only those with true power of inner self will get the truths revealed and the loss burnt.

Lark is right on terms of how Satan is said to be. That is pretty much the whole summary of what Satan really is in the bible. He is more or less a representation of the Christian view of pure evil, and what can await you after death if you act that way, in Christian belief. Also XD Brysing, perfect oppurtunity taken.
