Keep a journal with information about herbs.Their usages(magical and medical),if their poisonous, which part of the plant is used, etc, etc. But,most importantly, grow a plant!
Buy some seeds at the supermarket or wherever and grow your very own herb.Basil or Mint is a good starter plan.
I had my start with rosemary. I haven't used much herbalism, and do not consider myself very educated on it, but I do what I do with all natural things I use in my craft. I sense what it could be used for. Asking others and reading up on it helps too.

Be careful planting herbs, some take up a lot of space.Plant mint in an enclosed area, otherwise it will take over the whole garden.Bay will grow into a very large tree.Sage into a very large bush. But most herbs will grow quite well in pots.
