You might not be able to project your energy that far, once again, I can not suggest this enough, but meditate! I advise instead putting your hands really close when you do this excercise, just a couple centimetres apart, close your eyes and move one hand slowly back and forth across your other hand(without touching it!). If you can 'feel' the surface and dips of your other hand fingers without touching it than you have achieved the exercise.
I suggest lots of meditation with a focus of cycling your energy, try to move it around. I'm not going to go into specifics about meditation because it's some of the easiest information to come by.
