Creating your own Deity?
By:
There was a Satanist on another forum that spoke of creating his own deities... He called them beings but would often refer to them as gods. I have never heard of this kind of magick, and am rather curious as to whether this is a common practice in Satanism or whether it was unique to him.
It sounded like he would routinely "create" a new god for every point in his life, and that he was planning to make a god that I guess "out godded" his previous gods... perplexing, I say.

I have ideas as to what he could have meant but am unsure. The forum I was on is not very active at all, so I doubt if I will get answers from them. If anyone knows what this means, I would love to discuss it.

this sounds a bit like creating thoughtforms or familiars.

you have an intent, you make a sigil of it, then basically you bring the intent to life

the book for this... or at least what I am describing is by Frater UD and called "practical sigil magick." Though I imagine there are other books on the same topic.

So what your Satanist buddy is talking about is within that vein, of creating a kind of super thoughtform I guess with a meta- intent?

I dunno, most Satanists seem to think that they are "all that".

But that's kind of the closest thing that comes to mind

interesting concept I guess

I'd agree on saying it's a thought form. I've actually just started reading a public domain book on it so I'm unable to give too much insight into it. Even if he did create a "deity", it'd be incredibly weak no matter how much work he put into it.

I'd say most of a deity's power comes from how much they can draw from others. For example, Odin is a strong deity because not only can he draw on power from followers now but also from people in the past. If this guy creates his own, then his can only draw from his power. This is just my interpretation of how a deity gains his/her power.

I agree with thorleifc about it being thought forms. there is another step to just creating thought forms, its kind of cliche but i think the term for it was a godform, seeing as it would have the power of a god. though doing this puts a immense pressure on the creator of said thought form seeing as when a thought form reaches this state it can turn on the caster or just not follow the will of the caster, seeing as it would no longer need the caster to support itself. not only that but the intent would be like thorleifc said and have to be of meta intent or something along those lines. honestly i find this a little exaggerating a bit for one person to be creating a "god" for every point in his life and/or creating a even stronger god afterwords. he probably is just creating thought forms and thinking they reach godform or creating one god and then when he no longer has need of it, he dissinagrates (sorry bad spelling) it and uses the energy left over for another god later on. but even that is pushing it.

oh also almost forgot creating thought forms or just creating things in general as far as i know isnt a common practice in satanism. he probably studies creation along with his satanism.

I suppose thoughtforms would be similar. I have limited knowledge on that idea but I suppose it never crossed my mind.

Thanks for your input, now I wonder that if he creates a god, considering that gods feed off of others energy, could one make it stronger by gathering followers for it. If so, then I suppose that could answer some questions about history itself...

hmmm now that is an interesting concept...

I would think that god derives its own energy from the fact that it is a deity and has power of its own...which makes it a god. its abilities and powers exist in sense that we as mortals cannot attain

the supplicants draw their power from the god, not the god from the supplicants. if indeed gods are immortal; to quote Homer: "Not at all similar are the race of the immortal gods and the race of men who walk upon the earth"

this came up in an interesting novel by Gaiman called American Gods

That's why when I think of the Satanist doing this, maybe he was taking somewhat of a dramatic approach to his intentions he created. As those gods are not immortal if he created them, they have a beginning...

anyway, food for thought I suppose

I thought it was an interesting idea to kick around. If you think about it though a poem, created by man, is essentially immortal. In the words of Shakespeare, "So long as men can breath and eyes can see/ So long lives this and this gives life to thee."
