Your best bet is to start a dream journal. Before bed tell yourself that you will remember your dreams and when you wake up in the morning, write down everything as soon as you can. This help identifying when you're dreaming easier and as a result can help you to control what's going on in your dream. You can also develop a habit of doing something to make sure you're awake. Doing it long enough can cause you to do it in a dream and realize that you are dreaming. I'd research into lucid dreaming as well. Good luck!
