KSCP, there is a school of thought that one should not share one's magical name with others as it can give power over you. Not all hold by this teaching, so it's really up to the individual. I have a public name (Lark) by which I am known in the greater Pagan community. And I have a private magical name that is known only to those in my coven. But it truly is up to you to decide what you in particular want to reveal or not reveal.
I used numerology out of lovecrafts wiccan bible to find my magical name when i was 16 or 17. Im 39 now and thought i had long since otgrown it. But all the same i think i will keep it to myself being that i dont remember ever telling anyone. ~blessed be~
my birth name is Aubrey which means elf I am one of the tallest people in my family and my nickname bree sounds like a little kids so I named myself lyra I love that name and It fits better than my birth name
I love that this was brought up, my mother taught me Wicca and gave me a book as a gift and she marked a page that was about "Magickal Names", or in this case Craft names. It pretty much gave a similar discription.
Almost right away I knew I wanted to be known as Sacred Crow. It is a sacred animal to Ojibway/Anishinabeg which is part of my Ancestry, it also is what I wish to one day become when I die. I was doing animal spirit tarot reading on myself for my nine spirit animals and that was the first to be. I feel connected with this animal, and it is seen around where I live.
I had assurance that this is sacred to me, as well as magickal.
I have come to know that you may give your craft name to those who you believe you can trust with it. Or you can keep it just for you (and your coven if you belong to one). The decisions is really up to you.
If you feels right to you, go ahead. If not, then keep it for only your ears.
