That's the way I have been doing meditation for some 30 years and it works fine for me as well. If it works for you and allows you to enter a meditative state then it is a good way to do it.

Sometimes when first starting out, it's good to try out some guided meditations. They're like training wheels, and there are quite a lot to choose from. Even if you just practice for as little as 10 minutes a day, soon it will become a much more natural process for you, and you'll be able to get into deeper and more effective meditative states on your own.
