Magic Languages & Chants?

I have to agree here with GrayHealer. You should use the language you feel the most comfortable working with. Ah and also, Tired made a very resourceful of commonly used languages.

To strengthen the point of working with languages... Magic works because of the ability of the practitioner to raise, focus, and send forth energy for a purpose. The language doesn't matter at all and it could be argued that if the practitioner uses language unfamiliar to her/him it might actually impede the process.

Spell craft is very misunderstood by many people because they don't understand that the spell itself has no power. It takes most people years of practice and study to learn spell craft, and the tools, "ingredients," etc. are simply there to help us focus our intention and to act as sympathetic magical correspondences to aid us in our attempts.

The language is basically something you choose while casting your spells. I'd also like to add that in some spells you do not have to chant anything, simply manipulate and direct your energy for a purpose, which is the basic form of spell craft anyway.

I recommend to have this language as a language you feel comfortable with, because it helps you to focus your energy and manipulate it way better. Do not choose a language just because it seems 'cool' or because it's ancient. You better focus on energy manipulation and proper spell casting than having a cool chant or language.

I also recommend to know the language or at least what you're chanting, because you need to focus on something for a purpose and have an obvious intent.

I suggest the book Magic Power Language Symbol by Patrick Dunn. Excellent book that covers various linguistic uses in magick. It's a good overview that will not be the end of your reading, but only the beginning. After that, its up to you to individually research what Dunn discusses to get a more indepth understanding. But it's an excellent book to get your feet wet and ideas sparking.

I suggest looking into mantras, they're found within: Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. Mantra means, "thought that liberates and protects" and serve as a bridge between the physical realm and subtler realms. They have many different uses such as: protecting from disease and spirits, purifying mental afflictions, purifying karma, fulfilling wishes, generating compassion, liberating oneself from Samsara, etc. They may be associated with deities, Buddhas, Pure Lands, and different concepts. Mantras are much more than words, but powerful states of consciousness that one can yoke oneself with to benefit from their qualities and connect to the power of those who have, are and will chant them. Moreover, Mantras are timeless and have been introduced to people by Rishis (the ancient Indian seers who wrote the Vedas), deities/Buddhas, and accomplished Yogis of various traditions.

I agree with you VajrayanaMarta's are fantastic! I have a few there in Hindu I think but I like them. I find them very powerful.

Very rarely will I use spoken words when performing magic. I charge the energies available to me with my intent, and they carry it forth. That being said, I do tend to write in theban when working in my grimoire though, and when I do use spoken spells, I speak in english since it's my native language

The best language to use is to not use a language, but to feel, see, and empower whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. Words often get in the way of this. Chanting is a form of meditation where you clear your mind of everything else except for what you are saying thus causing you to feel, see, and empower only that which you are trying to accomplish. Thus, if you must use a language, use the one that allows you to clear your mind. If your natural tongue makes you think of other things when saying the words, use a different language. You can even make one up. The point of the chants, ceremonies, spells is to focus your mind to control the energy of what it is you are trying to accomplish. Once you truly know what it is you are trying to control, you don't need words anymore.

I will continue to work with Enochian magick. And yes, Latin is used a lot in magical practices.

Magick isn't limited to language so if someone did a luck spell in English, the same spell could be done in any other language.

For those that don't use words in their ritual there is a reason why one of the opening statements in the initiations of the G.D. is "By words and images are all powers awakened and reawakened." Never underestimate the power of the spoken word.

Words are all powerful. I work with the Theban and malachim alphabets as well as Hebrew in some rituals/ meditations. You can feel the power especially if you vibrate the words.
