For Astral projection the best way to get there and have good results you need a clear mind and zen.
you need focus and feel your body and breath. I started with exercises to help you control your mind and body through visualization and then expanded. At the begging its good to know where you are going before hand.

When your dreaming you go to the astral plane however you don't have much controll over what happens there so I suggest meditation so you can get your astral body there so you have full controll of it, mainly you just need concentraition but there is a few spells that will help you get there.
When dream you are not always on the Astral Plane. It is true that you can enter the Astral Plane while dreaming but dreaming itself is not Astral Projection. You can enter the Astral Plane while dreaming because your physical body is more open to the metaphysical and your 3rd eye opens more because your subconscious is more active while asleep.
For myself I go to the astral plane first and then like a sub-plane . Were most the time I am in control which is lucid dreaming but sometimes a different form can take over, which isnt always negative, but from there it becomes more like dreaming.
So for astral projection when you start out you should choose a place not a sub-plane but a very open place to practice and exercise abilities.
i had an out of body journey a while ago - it just take alot of patience and not giving up. I laid in bed and concentrated on my spirit inside of me pushing upward head first coming out first! then to a sitting position, waist high. breath slow and push up every night. picture a ball of light above your head and aim for that. eyes closed. I did that for a week and then popped out. you will feel intense vibrations right before you leave. Stay in control once you are out. I zoomed through the ceiling and went miles above the earth in seconds! Geila
