yes you can be a mermaid.. if you have lots of money.. you can go to a physics laboratory and ask the scientists or the engineers there to create you a mechanical fish tail and a breathing apparatus underwater.. but alteration spells won't help you.. (well of course you must be a good swimmer)..
These people are telling you what you don't want to hear; unfortunately that is usually the truth. And this is the truth:
You can believe all you want, but that doesn't change reality, and the reality is that magick cannot alter your physical state to the point you are only half human. Same goes with surviving off of blood, (a vampire) it simply isn't physically possible.
This life is so beautiful already, why must we expect more from it when it is such an awesome thing already?
It is possible, and I find it rather odd that you all claim it is not, yet you also claim to be Wiccan. I knew a Wiccan who, in her youth, wanted to become one, but grew out of it. She then took the year-and-a-day training, and because she had the patience to not do a single spell until she finished her training, the first spell she cast worked. She does not deny their existance as the rest of you do. Heck, I'll give you a link to her profile: http://www.43things.com/person/Iris_Nightphilly Besides, witchcraft is not the only way to become a mermaid. There is also shifting, biokinesis, and a way through astral projection to become a mermaid through both astral and physical form.
And has already been said, while possible in the astral mayhaps- it is impossible physically for a variety of logical reasons. So no, that person didn't turn either.

Magick, like anything in life has limitations. You can not change your physical appearence, genetic makeup, species or aquire superpowers through magick.
