I will try to answer the best I can, First of all The devil was created by the persians in ancient times to control the population, Next the organized religions co-opted it for guess what to control the population, going back the early church used the pentagram as a symbol of their religion til the cross superceeded it. the cross though a little different was a pagan symbol also, it was the romans who changed it . The pentagram is what it is a symbol representing the four elements and spirit. the organized religions denounced it as evil. That is why healers and others wise in the ways of natural laws are called witches, because the we won't be called saints by the organized religions.
Well that's my two bits worth.

The persians did not come up with the devil. They came up with the concept of duality, where there is an equal and opposite thing to everything in the universe. Light and darkness, day and night, oceans and deserts, good and evil, silence and noise? the list is endless. And to be more specific it wasn?t the people of Persia, it was the Persian Magi.

Another concept they came up with was Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu ? the avestean words for supreme wisdom and complete ignorance. The concept of duality became popular and was adopted by several people. It is only with time that people (not the Persian Magi) began personifying wisdom and ignorance with god and the devil, giving them different names and forms in different cultures.

It would be much nicer to give complete information, instead of making random statements about who came up with the devil.
The pentagram also known as the pentacle, the pentapha or the pentangle, is a five pointed star, formed by 5 straight lines between pentagon and a circle around it. The word pentagram comes from the greek word ?Penta? which means five and ?gramma? which means letter. Some historians have traced the pentagram to greece and have also called it ?the star of venus?. However, several argue that it came to Greece from the east with alexander?s invasions.

Some believe that the Pentagram is a symbol of the Persian Magi, who were perhaps the first known astrologers.

The pentagram has also been found on postherds of the pre-cuniform Uruk period of Babylonia and even Mesopotamia. The symbol appears in Egyptian hieroglyphics associated by Goddess Sodpet, known to represent the brightest star in the night sky. The hebrews looked upon the pentacle as a symbol of truth and the five books of Pentatuech. The pentagram is also associated with the star of david. The pentagram was found on Gnostic amulets, which contained the name YHWH in it. Early christians associated it with the 5 wounds of christ. The pentagram in christianity is often also called the ?star of bethlehem or the star of the Magi?.

The pentagram is found on the graves of the Templar Knights in France as well as being an important part of their architecture. The shrine of Rennes du Charters, which was the centre of templar activtiy is situated in the centre of a ring of mountains that form an almost perfect natural pentagram.
The pentagram has also been a symbol popular with masonic groups and neo pagan religions.

Each culture has given the five points of the pentagram a different meaning, representing a wide spectrum of things?elements of nature, angels, planets, so on and so forth. It?s difficult to pen everything about the pentagram in one or two posts. People have spent their lives trying to figure it out and trace its history. Many books have been written about it. And yet, we cant seem to pin it down completely. But it goes without saying that was a symbol that people revered.

Is the pentagram good or bad? Well, like all things in magic, it really depends how you use it and with what intent.

It was myminor in college. I am more partialto the post bellum period of history, but enjoy looking into the ancient cultures as well, History of the far east was also a great class. again I am not to happy with having relied on an erred source, but life goes on and every lesson learned is taken to heart part of growing older.
