As the other people have posted over and over again on the forum. Always start with the basics. Learn about herbs, crystals, stones, your elementals (air, fire, earth, water, spirit) incense/oils/aromas... candle magick... understand how various candles of different colors have different vibrations for you to use to facilitate your spellwork. You do not have to have a deity but you do want to know Goddess as The Maiden, The Mother and The Crone and her consort, The Horned God. Both separate but the equal. If you do want to determine what deity you have the most in common with. Develop a pantheon such as Celtic or Dianic or Faery Tradition... or whichever you choose... too many to name here. Learn your tools, athame/sword, wand/staff, altar, so many things to determine what works for you. There really are no set rules other than HARM NO LIVING THING. Learn the gifts Nature has to share with us. Respect Nature and evoke within you a loving, happy and divine spirit. Stay in tune and in time with Nature and its forces. Learn the moon phases, The Wheel and Sabbats and Craft holidays you may want to observe. But what I say to all initiates... that is imperative to becoming a successful witch or whatever you choose to call yourself... is give it a year and a day of serious focused effort. If after one year and one day you realize this is not working for you then move on but till then, because you will be so specialized in the basics, when you actually begin casting serious spells, the magick will move quickly and effectively through you and into your 'work'.
