I met mine while dream walking.

Meditation is a good method, you can also request that they give a message or a sign through a dream, using a Pendulum works if you have already met them, and I believe you can request a meeting on the Astral Plane as well. Those are the methods I know of.

Raven, I'm impressed. Most people require that their Spirit Guide takes a certain form when speaking to them, a form that the individual being guided can somehow relate to or feel calm with, but you knew to listen to your Spirit Guides as they took the forms that they themselves were most comfortable with. Congrats for that.
