A theory of mine

It has been for some time now that I have subscribed to this theory I developed, which I intend to talk about in this post, so that I can get your input. I want to know what you think about it, any adjustments you would make to it, and...any other thoughts you have while reading it.

Many beginners that come to this site ask questions like "What is magic?" or "Can everyone do magic?"
It is in partial response to these questions that I have formed this theory or belief. I'm not sure which one to call it.
So I will just write it.

Magic is the manipulation of energy around us, via the inflection of our will through focus and concentration.
This is what most occultists would define magic as, however, not all. Some would add or subtract some parts. But, this is not the theory I have formed. Simply a prelude.

This statement does not answer why magic is possible though. Simply how some believe it to work.

It is my opinion that magic is possible because of the very nature of humanity. Of all the life forms on earth, and in the universe, that we know of, we have the ability to asses our surroundings. Change our surroundings for better or worse, and know what it is that we do. We have the ability of forethought and afterthought. To predict, in a relative manner, the future and learn from the past. Every single human being is capable of both great destruction and creation. Like a gate through wich all things can come to pass. An elephant cannot climb a tree, and a dog cannot truly fly.
As humans we have to potential accomplish nearly anything. Provided that it is within the laws of physics. So it is my beliefe that magic is,essentially, possible becasue of this potential which we posses and our ability of recognizing this potential.

I agree and disagree. I think magic is possible because we all have energy inside us that allows us to do magic. You know the theory " That matter can't be created nor destroyed" (Or something like that) I think that after we do a spell the energy is recycled into the the air, or somewhere and eventually comes right back to us in some other shape of form.

I like to think of magic as everything. There is an infinite number of ways of explaining how magic works, from gods to energy dynamics . The only way to embrace them all is to say that magic is every single thing. "Everything" includes "nothing" which is something, if nothing else a concept or word. It also includes every degree and combination between nothing and everything and something.
This just being a few thoughts, albeit a bit jumbled.

I kind agree with Darksith, the laws of physics as we know can not be broken, but bent.

Specially from the consider that practitioner of magic point of view of the world is entirely different from a normal person.

I hate to quote movies but "there's no spoon" ^-^

A really good example of how the laws of physics can be "bent" or circumvented would be faster-than-light travel. Nothing in three dimensional space can travel faster than light, however that is only true so long as certain actions aren't taken. It would be possible theoretically to travel 'faster' from point A to point B in terms of distance using a wormhole, with the winded example of folding a piece of paper so the two points touch. It's also theoretically possible to go faster than the speed of light using a method to bend space, like a gravity well, so that it acts like a wave on the ocean. I mean, we used to think time was a constant.. but we keep reinventing our models as we find more out about the universe we live in... and just look at quantum physics, the scientific community won't call it magic, but conscious observation effects the behavior of quarks.

As interesting as it is to talk about the what, why and hows of magic, it simply being a part of the universe is the best part, in my opinion.

I'd like to point out that, while all of these things are good points on how we are able to "bend" the laws of physics...they're missing the major point if the post xD
Also, if all of these things are possible, they aren't outside the laws of physics. Simply a part of the laws that we haven't been able to test outside of theory. It is impossible to exist outside the laws of physics within this dimension (assuming that someone would think of the laws of physics pertaining to another dimension, although we cannot access them or even have proof that they exist. That I'm aware of.), Only possible to discover new facets of them, and amend them.

Right. But the "laws" of physics are flawed in the fact that they are mainly set to say what something cannot do, rather than what it can.. let that simmer, :D

Psyco quoting The Matrix! Even though the movie was sci fi, the philosophies they used were ones already highly prized in many cultures/religions. I think that's what made it such a hit--that and Keanu Reeves. Lol What Dreams May Come was another one, and one of my favorites.

As for theory on how magick works. I think Cassiel is correct, but magick has many facets of explaination, and Cassiel's is more of a poetic philosophical way of explaining it. The other's who have posted afterward include a more scientific explaination. Nothing wrong with either, they're just different perspectives on the same idea. I believe everyone is on the same basic level with what magick is and how it works with variations that reflect religion/belief and scientific knowledge.

Really nice topic guys! I enjoyed the read.
