Um, Darksun? Where did you read that myth?

Arachne was the name of the weaver girl who was the mother of all spiders. And she didn't catch the eye of Apollo...she bragged that her weaving was better than Minerva's. For her arrogance (or some say out of spite) Minerva changed Arachne into a spider. The only variations on the myth I've seen have been whether or not Arachne's weaving WAS in fact better than Minerva's.

And I'd really like to know where the part about "Arachnida's Tears" comes from. I've never seen that anywhere.

Arachnida is the name of the class of eight legged arthropods that spiders, ticks, scorpions and mites belong to. It's a biology term not a mythology name.

Now that has been said, the spider is a symbol of good luck...but like any symbol it is meaningless without people to ascribe meaning to it. If people got bad luck from squishing spiders, there would be some kind of cultural taboo about doing so... I know of no such thing. I suspect your spell is working fine, I mean you saw the spider and it didn't bite you right? If you feel bad, go ahead and ritualize the spider's demise...it makes no difference to the spider. Spiders have short life spans anyway, frequently a year or less.

Don't worry about it. If you have bad luck it's probably not from the spider. It's easy to look for a cause but usually luck problems don't have one. If you're still feeling bad about it, pray to whatever you feel sent the spider and ask for its forgiveness.

Personally I like spiders because they eat mosquitoes. That doesn't stop me from squishing them if they are close enough to bite me or anyone else I care about, because I live in an environment where poisonous spiders are common. Your deity must have a heck of a sense of humor to send you a symbol you hate. Maybe they're trying to tell you something?

Now that you mention it, Sarafiel, I remember that story from elementary school. And, yes, I totally had a funeral for Baby Spider Jr. :)

I like the idea of my deity having a sense of humour. Publically, I'm a Pastafarian and I worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster. (worth researching if you never heard of Pastafarianism) I usually pray to Aphrodite or Jesus. If I'm being told anything, it's probably that I shouldn't be afraid of them.

I mean, it's just the way they look that scares me. Everything else about them is fascinating, and I feel like I relate to them.

Haha, thank you

Oh yes, brown recluse spiders are even more poisonous then black widows. They are very small and are the shape of a violin, watch out! :P

Excuse me;
Do you know what a brown recluse spider is? They seem harmless looking, until they bite you. I was living about 80 miles north of Amarillo, Texas, in a small town named Dumas, Texas. At the time, I was a Safety Manager for a raw-hide(cattle) processing plant. One day a guy employee I knew for awhile, asks me to examine his chest in the employee locker room because he thought he was bit by a spider overnight, because when he woke up in the morning, he noticed his right chest area hurting and swollen. So, in the locker room, when he lifted his T-Shirt for me to observe, I swear, his right chest area was so swollen, it looked like a female breast size 34C cup! I was awed, speechless. Then, I had to bite my lip and control myself from rolling over on the floor and laughing my a-- off! There was a tip to this, like the head of a zit right next to his nipple. As I observed it quietly, he whispers seriously to me and asks me what he should do. I can go on but, my point is, a brown recluse spider seems harmless enough looking. Google images of it and see if that is what you killed. You may have saved yourself from a painful and expensive spider bite. Hope this helps

Sorry but I must drop in with another fact correction.

Brown recluse spiders are NOT very small, they are about average size for spiders (1/4 inch to 3/4 inch or larger). They are also NOT shaped like violins. They have a violin shaped MARKING on their back, but they are shaped like spiders.

And yes, they're very poisonous. If you live in an area that has poisonous spiders of any kind, you shouldn't worry about squashing them. I like spiders and I free them as often as I can, but if I can't get to it without risking being bitten, I will sadly squash the offending arachnid.

By all means, retain a healthy respect for any spider. There's no need to fear them, not all of them are dangerous and even the dangerous ones don't really want to hurt us. Some people think spiders are mean because they'll chase people. They aren't actually mean, they're just territorial. Some creatures like wasps are actually mean spirited and will deliberately sting to cause pain. Spiders don't do that typically. Respect the spider, but don't fret too much if you have to squish one or if you do so by accident.

It wasn't a recluse, no. Though, it is technically possible for it to have been... But I'm relatively certain it was an ordinary Baby Spider Jr.

Fiddle backs are my worst fear ever though. When I was a little girl I obsessively checked my clothes and shoes for any kind of spider hiding inside. Even pictures of them scare the shit out of me.
