Here is a great middle! In many cultures people add a place setting (placemat plate utensils and napkin) at the table and invite their passed over loved ones or whatever spiritual being they invite to eat with them. I do this at every holiday. Pour them wine or whatever you're giving and when you're done eating, they should be too. You can put the plate away and pour the wine outside over dirt, throwing it in the garbage is disrespectful.
Offering fruit, honey and other animal friendly foods is best if you're not going to eat it yourself. Many rituals were done outside and when food "disappearred" off the plates it was likely to be a hungry little critter.
You can leave the plate outside in the same fashion and I'm sure most if not all of it will be gone within a few hours.
