If you're talking about in movies, I would say they are the same thing. But I agree with Luna, they don't exist. Unless of course you are on the astral plane, or on some sort of psychoactive drug.

In the movies a werewolf is cursed and only turns on the full moon. A lycan on the other hand is not cursed and can turn whenever they wish.

There is no such thing. Lycan is a word that people get from the movie
underworld. They are either werewolf, shapeshifters. And they do not live on this
plane. They live on astral planes.

I wasn't being serious Sabata the only wolves I believe in, live in the wild and are just that a wild wolf.

Personally I think the lycan association comes from the word "lycanthropy" generically used to explain transformation from human into animal form also know as "therianthropy"

And clinical lycanthropy which is the delusion that you can actually change from human to animal form.

There's also another myth that the word is related to King Lycaon of Arcadia(Greek Mythology)
