Reading when casting

Ok, please dont shoot me down for asking this but... when casting a spell but reading the instructions as you go, will that effect the spell do you think? My problem is I tend to miss steps and I feel more confident if I am reading the steps as I go, specially when it come to long chants.

If reading the steps as you go leaves you with the confidence you require then that is likely the best way to progress. Being uncertain of yourself and your intention and so forth can be worse than losing your focus from reading the next step or chant.

Nothing wrong at all with having the words written, for instance, on a card propped up on your table or altar. Try. though, not to hold the paper in one hand. It could easily "block" the energy.
