It's called a dowry, and in many countries it is still going on.
There is also something called a bride price in which a man pays the parents of the woman he wishes to marry and can still be seen in countries today.

The manner in which a woman is regarded by society can be seen in whether the customs called for the dowry or the bride price ie: we pay you to take her off our hands or you pay us to continue your blood line with certain assurances.

Even today, in most Western countries, there is a form of dowry. No longer a "bride price", but the bride's parents are still expected to pay for the wedding, and reception.

yes it is called dowry, it is mainly seen in India and it hasn't stopped yet.

in olden days the sons parents will pay to the daughters parents for giving there their child for marrying, but is is reversed now and now the daughters parents are paying now.

dowry is a bad system according to me.

why should one pay to the other like that with some silly reason?

The idea of the bride's parents paying for the wedding is the old idea of the husband being the breadwinner, and he will "keep" her for life. The sort of "With all my worldly goods I thee endow". Nonsense in modern times, of course, but still a "tradition".

No, the parents would certainly not be paid. The prospective "bridegroom" is the one to be paid. It was seen as a "payment" to take the girl from her parents. One must remember that in primitive cultures, a girl child was thought to be useless, more so if there was more than one girl in the family. Sons could (and did) hunt, fish, etc. Daughters did not. The "mother" of the family was the only female really needed. Other females were merely being "kept" by father and brothers, until such time as she could be "married off". The ancient man's nightmare was a family of all girls!

However, at one time there were families who would fight tooth-and-nail to stop the daughters getting married! It was the only time in history that a daughter was "precious" to certain families. These were men who were "weavers of wool". In order to weave the wool it first had to be spun; and it was the girls who did the spinning! A new word entered the English language for an un-married woman. Spinster! Still in use today!
