sweet--your right!! also i was reading the star pentacle sign represents us , or a pesons form, it consists of the 5 elements earth water fire air and spirit and as one it equates into the divine or magical person representation , the circle around the star represents the divine or god -and is a magical representation with the meaning of the magical law :as above so below, and or portrayal of spirit over the physical elements. see this link to understand furthur http://members.shaw.ca/bbogdan/blog_images/wicca/pentacle.htm

I agree with whats has been said above, only that some people do not consider spirit as an element , we ourselves are the spirit within our circle .

The spirit element or(ether) represents the consciousness and soul, spirit doesn,t represent anything of nature as the other four elements do ,fire, water, earth, air. Spirit can not be touched you can only feel and experience the energy from spirit .
It is above and is the connecting point of the other four elements, the center of knowing

The pentacle can also stand for the 5 wounds christ received, and also eosjos, you are correct when stating that it can represent the human body/ condition. Everything is made up of the 5 elements, and the circle can be said to be the divine, or god, w/e, what I usually teach or speak of with the circle is that it's the universe . (i have to say this all the time, it's committed to memory now) The pentacle, as I see it, stands for the 5 elements in the eternal cycle of the universe, always moving forward and never stopping. It's the true representation of the never ending ebbing and flowing of all things. Things that arise, will fall, then their energy reborn again.

Also Ginseng, I have to say that you are correct, not everyone see's spirit as the fifth element. However in stating that not everyone believes that the other four elements are fire, earth, air and water either. A good example is the Chinese culture. Which is Metal, Earth, Wood, Water, and Fire. Everyone is entitled to believe something different. Though maybe I should have posted all this with my original post LOL.

before I forget, I think I should mention the difference between inverted and right side-up pentacles/pentagrams as well. The inverted penta. is matter of spirit, the right side up is spirit over matter. Thought I should put this out there. I get a lot of questions about it.

I personally believe that the elements are: Fire=The Heart & Emotions, Water= The Spirit & Contious, Earth= The Body & Actions and Air=The Mind & Thoughts.

The five elements are needed, essential, for life; flora and fauna.
The fifth, spirit, may be whatever you believe. I was trained in natural witchcraft in that the spirit is the "life force". How powerful is this life force can be seen all around. Clear a piece of land of all traces of plant life. Leave it for three weeks; it will be covered in plants! The ancients knew this. Especially in very forested regions, jungles, etc. They would clear an area for planting crops (usually by fire) then, when the soil became "tired", they would leave it and clear another area. The land they leave will, in a very short space of time, go back to jungle again. That is how powerful the life force is. The most powerful instinct in all animals (humans included) is self-preservation; and the next most powerful is sex (the preservation of the species). Everything that grows needs the elements:- air (atmosphere);earth (food); water; and fire (the Sun); together with the life force spirit, this is all the magic! Blessed Be.

The fifth element according to the western system of magic is Akasha also known as Aether or simply spirit. Each of the elements has certain tools that represent it. In the golden dawn tradition, the initiate is expected to create a set of "elemental weapons" as he progresses. These are the fire wand, the air dagger, the water cup, and the earth pentacle. Each of these is painted with the corresponding color with the sigils and names of ascociated entities written with the secondary or "flashing" color. The exception is the earth pentacle which is painted with the colors of the sephira Malkuth on the Kabbalistic tree of life. Modern wiccal has the dagger as the symbol of fire and the wand as the symbol of air. Other symbols include incense, a fan, feathers, smudge stcks, and a staff for air. Candles, firebowls, and a sword for fire. Discs, coins, the altar, stones, salt, and a shield for earth. And scrying bowls, cauldrons, and silver spoons for water. Spirit can be represented by a crystal ball, the circle, and a lamen.
