Think of it as a work in progress, and a lifes' work. It's never really finished. Sure you can gain some skills as you progress, but you never truely master them, at least not fully.
The best you can do is progress as far as your willing to go, if you think you have 'mastered' your skill, then so you have. However, that does not mean there isn't more that you could learn, or ways to improve on that skill or even come up with new things you could do with said skill(or combinations of two skills you put together to come up with something new).
Ego: Well, I rushed into ''the cool stuff'' when I was 12, after 4 years of study (I was at a university level of reading at that age). Things went horribly wrong. I have now practiced for 21 years, and still don't do ''cool stuff'' all the time, as magic is part of my religion, and not something to play with.

Angelicwitch what everyone said above is good advice. Doin spellwork is going to follow the path of least resistance and it can happen, but you might not notice it right away due to it could be a subtle change or result. I have been practicing for a little over ten years and only have seen one thing that happened in ritual that was crazy. We were all raising energy around the fire in the cauldron and the fire started to spiral in the cauldron into a pillar in the middle of the cauldron. Lasted for a few moments. Most of the time magick is not going to be this big show, but more on a subtle level. Don't get discouraged if it seems like your magick might not be working because you don't see this major change. Hollywood has given the craft this bad reputation. If you don;t have the faith and the basics for your work to happen then it's not going to happen. The more you practice the more you ill be able to notice the results. You also have to find the practice that works for you. With me when I do spell work I always have to say prayers to certain spirits before I start my spellwork. Others can mentally think about a spell and get results. Others do rituals. Good luck and remember have faith that what you do is all ready happening. The trick to spellwork is while doing the spell seeing your results all ready happening. If doing a healing see your target as being healed all ready.
