Ragnorok, earlier you meantioned "7 signs of a role player" but you really can't hold someone with bad typing skills or bad grammer to be a lier/role player.

I can't count how many times I have had to explain this already, but when there is more then one symptom to a problem you look for multiple symptoms to that problem. Spelling is ONE symptom, claiming to be inhuman would make TWO symptoms, not knowing anything about the reality of the race/creature/species/entity that the individual would claim to be makes THREE symptoms. SO; we have an immortal, fire-sword wielding, flying, shining vampire and I'm supposed to think that just because he can't spell "the" without switching the E with the H he isn't a roleplayer? Spelling is often a problem for people who lack the intelligence to separate fantasy from reality, from what I have seen that is a fact and so I list it as a symptom.

good post im with ragnorok and kikuyo. quoting from shakesphere, there are more thing in the universe than you have dared dream my dear Horatio. Although not a direct quote it is close, anyway for centuries mankind has taken a moral and spiritual pride about the subjects of life, god or gods, and pretty much everything. this general attitude leads each individual or group of individual to believe in the fact that they know everything. right now we are in a age were all of the past is being called into question along with the general beliefs that continually perpetuate the past being repeated. there has been a movement of soul searching every since mid nineties that has led to the thoroughly dismantling of the old belief structure were conformity and the belief that we should all be more similar than different, along with the Wests constant spiral away from the spirit world has left an entire generation searching for their own answers. i have seen many of these groups and spirit and the term other-kin is brought on frequently, the term represents either a past life were you were something more or what you are in eternity.
I think a lot of people are just innately aware of the situation, and a lot of people who aren't other-kin or haven't fully awakened to their inner or higher selves I believe are just caught up in the general energy pervading the earth right now. Role playing is generally seen as a form of escapism to help on deal with a life that is unbearable, and while this is true there is another side of this coin.
Now in the beginning I seemed to be a role player of sorts, and in truth in some aspects i was. But my entire life i knew i was completely different than other people and at first this led to feelings of superiority I soon realized that this was false and a wrong way of thinking. So my entire life i had tried to explain or conceptualize my differences in a totally explainable and rational way. but with out others in or undergoing the same process it is likely to pick up a lot of inconsistencies. Until i came here my search for who i really was i was stifled by everyone in my life. When i reached here I realized i wasn't alone and while the truth was inside me i also had a lot of fantasies. through the help of others like Ragnarok and people who generally cared I was able to sift through the garbage until i found the treasure of my self.
Now I readily admit not everyone that RPs is going through same process i have a general idea that an educational attitude should be taken towards people who truthfully are looking for answers. And I will admit there are those who are impossible when it comes to educating on such matters this is largely due to brainwashing by media ,government, mainstream religion, and other sources, I think in time the truth will spread and the RPing will become more manageable.
All that is needed is a compassion to realize that we all are going through the same awaking process and that while some of us could easily grasp this process and flow with it there are some who still have no idea whats going on. I think this results when someone starts the process but then stops. I believe when this happens the person may still gasp for the truth unconsciously, and i believe this leads to a lot of RPing I see. Maybe all that is required is an intelligent, wise, and caring discussion and consensus on the what exactly is happening in the world and i believe that the truth is slowly revealing itself to all mankind.

I'll respond to PureChaos in pieces, not to pick it apart, just to manage my thoughts lol:

"... mankind has taken a moral and spiritual pride about the subjects of life, god or gods, and pretty much everything. this general attitude leads each individual or group of individual to believe in the fact that they know everything. right now we are in a age were all of the past is being called into question along with the general beliefs that continually perpetuate the past being repeated."

-- This is where science really ticks me off; it's the pompous attitude of those who are absolute non-believers in anything metaphysical, spiritual, magickal, to the point of putting down those who believe. The scientific truth is constantly being rewritten, but spiritual studies have only ever /grown/ on top of what was known before. I don't think we should completely ignore science, but I do not think that it is not science's proper place to try to pick apart existence. You can argue that there is no proof to spirituality, but "proof" is something applied to physical things, science experiments, not matters of the heart. In short, I believe we should leave science out of spirituality and begin using our intuitions again to explain the non-physical world. Science is great in medicine and technology, but there is a difference between explaining a mystery and sucking all of the wonder out of something.

"there has been a movement of soul searching every since mid nineties that has led to the thoroughly dismantling of the old belief structure were conformity and the belief that we should all be more similar than different, along with the Wests constant spiral away from the spirit world has left an entire generation searching for their own answers."

-- The East has moved away from spirituality as well, especially in the really developed places like Japan and eastern China, Korea. They are pulled farther and rather away from nature, but they do retain certain superstitions and spiritual beliefs. There is a saying that the Japanese are born Shinto, marry Christian, and die Buddhist. Religion and the other-world don't have as much holding as they used to. They still go through the motions of the various festivals, but in my observation they have lost their depth.
I would say the 'soul searching' movement is older than the 90s, but it really boomed then. 'New Age' stuff has become a fad and people are more free to write about spirituality, but in this freedom is the constant threat of exploitation. By writing about such intangible topics you are able to claim just about anything to make money. A lot of these books and teachers exploit the fear of the unknown, the fear of the afterlife and fear of poverty, war, the boogieman. I am a terrible, terrible, cynic, but it is my firm belief that if you truly want to help someone with your teachings you will do it absolutely free. There is nothing stopping you from getting a 'real' job alongside spreading your philosophy.

"i have seen many of these groups and spirit and the term other-kin is brought on frequently, the term represents either a past life were you were something more or what you are in eternity. I think a lot of people are just innately aware of the situation, and a lot of people who aren't other-kin or haven't fully awakened to their inner or higher selves I believe are just caught up in the general energy pervading the earth right now."

-- My personal take on it, as I said in my first post, is that the soul is much higher than we understand on a day-to-day basis. The soul has no gender, so species, no definite shape. I do believe it has preference when it incarnates and it choose he form that will best allow it to learn the lesson or accomplish the goal it has to. In the case of Otherkin, I think it is a very deep connection to a past life or something that the soul remembers about being incarnated in that form. Your heart and soul will always want things that drive the flesh insane.

"Role playing is generally seen as a form of escapism to help on deal with a life that is unbearable, and while this is true there is another side of this coin.
Now in the beginning I seemed to be a role player of sorts, and in truth in some aspects i was. So my entire life i had tried to explain or conceptualize my differences in a totally explainable and rational way."

-- I think the need to escape comes from how stifling the flesh can be. We dream bigger today than we ever have, and these dreams (while inspiring and motivating) can be the biggest hindrance. Kids read books, write stories, get absorbed in TV, movies, and video games to avoid how comparably boring their lives are. I am no exception; I love nothing more than a really thick book, something I can stay lost in for a long, long time. It's very weird to me the trends of 'wants' in society. We have gone from wanting perfect hair and money to wanting perfect hair, money, super powers, otherworldly love interests, such wonderful things... but few people seem to want to work to deserve these things. It seems like "because it happens in this book, it can/should happen to me just like that!"

"... I realized i wasn't alone and while the truth was inside me i also had a lot of fantasies. through the help of others like Ragnarok and people who generally cared I was able to sift through the garbage until i found the treasure of my self."

-- I think this is really nicely put :) And it brings up a good point: separation of fantasy and reality. The more you sift through it the more you realize how magickal and strange reality really is. Not every fantasy is so far fetched, but you gotta prioritize.

"at RPs is going through same process i have a general idea that an educational attitude should be taken towards people who truthfully are looking for answers. And I will admit there are those who are impossible when it comes to educating on such matters...Maybe all that is required is an intelligent, wise, and caring discussion and consensus on the what exactly is happening in the world and i believe that the truth is slowly revealing itself to all mankind. "

-- I think and know a lot more than I let on. I don't feel that at this time and place, SoM is the place to deal with all my wacko ideas lol, and I have a hard time dealing with the very young members who want things done their way when they dictate. I don't always have the patience to explain my views, so I just ignore them or give a blunt "no". It's not my job to try and make things click... if they are meant to 'get it' and rise above, they will eventually. Patience is a virtue.

Wow that was wicked ramble-y O_O I apologize.

TL;DR: I am against the roleplay on the site but I do believe there is more to it than kids just acting out for attention.

and it's annoying, irritating and wrong in so many ways
i wish i could just gag anyone who roll plays or doesn't want to learn real magick...seriously...if there's something that annoys me it's the roll playing or posing....i can deal with ignorance when people ask me "can you turn me into a mermaid?" because they don't know that something like that cannot be done...but when someone thinks they know everything about magick because it's like that in the movies AND starts "learning" newbies in the chat, i wanna loose my mind!!!

If you don't know REAL magick, DON'T "teach" other people or give them advice!

Role play is a part of any group of people who are interacting. We all have rolls in life that we play. We are all chidren of someone and we need to always be that when around them. We will always be someones freind or enemy. Some of us are siblings, some of us are parents, some are students, some are worker bees, and even some are just here to sit back an be entertained. I like to call these people watchers :) An I bet that there are some who have all of these roles in life that they must play the part of.

Now that said in chat you can not claim to be other than human or interupt chat with to much action (the /me stuff). :)

this is from the #3 chatter rule that we all agree to but few actually read.

RPing includes claims of impossible feats and accomplishments. Remember there are many moderators who have been pagans, wiccans and students of the occult far longer than you and we know what is possible and we will know when you are lying.

so in addition to the obvious role playing vampires and elves, werewolves and fairys (lions and tigers and bears...oh my), tales of your flying and teleporting etc are also considered role playing
