To add my advice:
First, you have to decide what it is you really want from magick, what sort of path you're drawn to, be it Druidism, Wicca, Folk Magick, whatever. And then you have to accept the reality of magick. For it to work, you have to believe, but you also need to recognize what results look like. You will not shot rainbows and unicorns from your fingertips (on this physical plane, at least). The power of your magick depends largely on your belief and conviction, not so much your 'skill' (because skill is really your success rate anyway).
Starting small is always a good thing, and meditation. Meditation sounds so blaaah and boring and the advice is thrown around a lot, but rarely used to its full potential. Meditation helps to prepare the mind to accept the magick, it helps visualization A LOT, and it helps to keep your energies in check. It teaches you discipline. Magick is a commitment, not a party trick.
Research is also vital. Know what you are dealing with. Become familiar with symbols, techniques, paths, and traditions. If you're into Egyptian gods/goddesses, make sure you know the mythology, or Norse, Native American, etc. If you are a Shaman-to-be, become familiar with animals. Make learning fun; fall in love with knowledge, with the path you chose. 'Browse around' before you 'buy'. It's not a blood-bond sealed for eternity or anything, but if you only scratch the surface of stuff, all you will get are surface results.
I hope this helps you :) I wish you the best of luck.
