March 20th, 2019 - Pink not Worm and the Coming Blue Moon

This article was added by The Order

Let's clear up some misconceptions about the Super Moon and the coming Blue Moon.

On March 20th, at 17:58 Eastern Time, Spring will begin.

A little less than 4 hours later at 21:43 we will have a full moon. Another Super Moon, the 3rd of the year and the last Super Moon for 2019.

So let's get a few things straight, and you can lord your new knowledge over those who get this all wrong.

Names of Moons

It is often said that the full Moon in January is called the Wolf Moon. This is "sometimes" true. In fact it is the first full Moon of Winter which is the Wolf Moon. This usually happens in January, but not always, since Winter begins on December 21st (give or take). I will note here, and freely admit the mistakes made in https://www.spellsofmagic.com/coven_ritual.html?ritual=4001&coven=1 as this was technically not the Wolf Moon, but in fact the Snow Moon, since it was the 2nd Full Moon of Winter. The first happened on Dec 22, Winter having started the day before on the 21st.

The media will be reporting that the full Moon on March 20th will be the Worm Moon, however, that is incorrect as well. Being that this will be the first full Moon of Spring it is the Pink Moon (aka, Egg Moon, Fish Moon).

Does this really matter? In a way yes. Because of the coming Blue Moon.

SPRING : Mar. 20, 5:58 p.m.
Mar. 20 Pink Moon 9:43 p.m.
Apr. 19 Flower Moon 7:12 a.m.
May 18 Blue Moon 5:11 p.m.
Jun. 17 Strawberry Moon 4:31 a.m.
SUMMER : Jun. 21, 7:54 a.m.

The table above shows the times of the start of Spring and Summer and the times of the Full Moons. This Spring will have 4 full Moons. ABlue Moon is the 3rd Full Moon in a season which has 4 full Moons (most seasons only have 3).

I will refer you to https://www.spellsofmagic.com/coven_ritual.html?ritual=4001&coven=1 and the What is a Wolf Moon? section. That is a good summary of the Moon names and the Blue Moon, and why the Moons are named the way they are.

One final note. Although the full Moon names appear to be a month off right now, after the Blue Moon they are corrected.

I will also like to point out https://www.farmersalmanac.com/full-moon-names Although they do a good job of listing the names of the Moons they fail to tell you what a Blue Moon is. They also, unfortunately, link the name of the Moon to the month and not the season. and I will point you to the first two sentences on the page:

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of North America. Tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon.

This is true, completely, but their logic fails afterwards and shows the folly of associating Moon names to months..... The Native Americans did not use our calendar. They had no idea of "months" as Europeans did. The start and end dates of months is completely arbitrary, they were made up and we have stuck with the same calendar for convenience. The idea that Native Americans somehow used the same calendar as Europeans is just crazy.
