Sekhmet is one of the oldest known Egyptian Deities. Sekhmet is the goddess of fire, war, vengeance, and medicine. She is depicted as a lion-headed woman, sometimes with the addition of a sun disk on her head. Her seated statues show her holding the ankh of life, but when she is shown striding or standing she usually holds a scepter formed from papyrus suggesting that she was associated primarily with the north. She was often closely associated with Hathor (the goddess of joy, music, dance, sexual love, pregnancy and birth). In this partnership, she was seen as the harsh aspect of the friendly Hathor. Sekhmet?s main cult center was in Memphis where she was worshipped as the destroyer alongside her consort Ptah and Nefertum. Sekhmet is a Solar deity, sometimes called the daughter of the sun god Ra. She was given the title Eye of Ra. Bast is sometimes considered to be Sekhmet?s counterpart or twin depending on the legend. Sekhmet represents Upper Egypt while Bast represents Lower Egypt. Sekhmet?s symbols are the sun disk, red linen and lioness. There is a Temple of Goddess Spirituality in Southern Nevada dedicated to the Goddess Sekhmet.
I have been doing research on Sekhmet and Bast and I decided to share some knowledge I learned on Sekhmet.
