About 20 years ago, I used to experience dreams in which I was near the ceiling looking down at my sleeping body, while simultaneously I am in my body trying to wake myself up.

In the dream, I am aware that I am sleeping but also aware that I'm in two different locations. When in my body, I felt like I was paralyzed.

This always frightened me so I'd try to wake up. I would try to move my toes and fingers. I wouldn't wake up so I'd start to panic, trying to move my legs and arms. I'd then try to shake my head from side to side, but nothing would work.

Suddenly, I'd pop up awake, gasping for air.

I read a book recently in which the author said that his AP experiences began with a feeling of being paralyzed in bed while also being able to see himself in bed.

Could what was happening to me have been a pre-AP experience?

BTW, those dreams don't happen anymore and so far I haven't been able to AP through relaxation or guided meditation.
